Introduction

On a sunny July afternoon, we relaxed on our deck with some wonderful friends, and enjoyed food and wine together. No formal notes were taken - these are from memory and from judicious sniffing of the empty bottles to jog my memory.

Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 1987 Dr. Zenzen Valwiger Herrenberg Riesling Spätlese *

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Beautiful wine. A rich, golden color in the glass, with a smooth and ripe mouthfeel. Good balance and structure, and a honeyed sweetness - not quite sweet enough for a dessert wine but a real treat. Thanks to Matt for sharing this bottle.

  • 2002 Château Belá (Egon Müller) Dry Riesling

    Slovakia, Južnoslovenská, Štúrovský

Purchased completely on a whim - I've never tried riesling from Slovakia before. It had a very strong petrol nose, with notes of lemon, vanilla, grapefruit, and of course - petrol - on the palate. More of an off-dry style - and an interesting wine!

  • 2003 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Good, sweet riesling, with a hint of cream, slate mineral, and honeyed apricots and vanilla. Drinking very well.

  • 2004 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Crisp and elegant, with a balanced sweetness. Light, with good acidity and structure. Notes of slate, lemon and orange peel, with a delicate finish.

  • 2006 Mönchhof Robert Eymael Riesling Estate

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

A riesling with a rich and varied history - produced beginning in 1177, according to the bottle. Light, sweet, glycerin mouthfeel, with a slightly tart and lemony finish.

  • 2005 Château d'Aqueria Tavel

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Tavel

Very sweet for a rosé, with almost a hint of liqueur. Tastes of overripe strawberries with a slightly bitter finish.

  • 2007 Bodegas San Alejandro Calatayud Rosado Las Rocas

    Spain, Aragón, Calatayud

Always a fun wine. A garnacha rosé, with a bright color. Strawberries on the nose, with a fresh, light flavor. Paired very well with the marinated chicken skewers.

  • 2007 Pax Rosé

    USA, California, Sonoma County

Not the best showing for this bottle. The color was beautiful, but the wine tastes of slightly bitter raspberries with a tart, almost grapefruity finish. This was slightly disappointing as this is usually a crowd-pleaser. At least the bottle was cool...

  • 2005 Hyde De Villaine Chardonnay

USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

Light, crisp Chardonnay, with good acidity. Oak is well integrated, and the balance and mouthfeel was excellent. Notes of vanilla, slate mineral, and a hint of buttered toast. Delicious.
