Dirty Dozen at H & H Beverly Center - "Bring Out Your Reds"

Tasted Thursday, May 16, 2024 by rstark with 170 views

Introduction

Uncharacteristic theme of "just bring any red that you think will win". Cali wines all podiumed. Not a great night for Clape, Gaja and Cheval Blanc. :(

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 1999 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas 89 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

Brett was so abundant that the nose was off-putting. Obviously some pretty fruit under there but too hard to discernt under all that funk. Sadly, among 11 other wines , there was no time for it to blow off.

  • 1997 Joseph Phelps Insignia 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

My favorite among 12 great reds. The nose was overly sweet, as was the attack (someone said it reminded them of Brach's carmels). But the herbal and leather notes from the mid-palate turned it into a complex and non-cloying experience. Great long finish ... tannins are in a perfect place

  • 1969 Ridge Zinfandel Fox Road 93 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County

Lite, transparent red color with a pretty fruit nose. Gorgeous strawberry- rhubarb fruit. Very light and elegant but such a loooong 30-second finish. (!!!) How can this be 53 years old??? Tasted at Bern's in December, and fortunately David bought a bottle there so I got to try it again 5 months later.

  • 2014 Salt Vine Cabernet Sauvignon 88 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Overpowering Hershey Bar on the nose AND attack. Was way too difficult trying to find the fruit among all the chocolate. I did not enjoy this wine at all, and the crowd was quite divided. The Lokoya, Kacscandy and Insignia outclassed it for sure (IMHO)

  • 2005 Kapcsándy Family Winery Roberta's Reserve State Lane Vineyard 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Yountville

Very nice nose of smoke/fruit. The fruit was suprisingly red fruited ... did not taste Napa-like. The earthy/cigar character made for a complex flavor profile. But missing something in the finish (a little wimpy)

  • 2016 Gaja Barbaresco

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

What a waste of a beautiful bottle. Up against the Napa reds and Bordeaux, it tasted too lite and too tite. And even worse... the tannins were tough and overpowering. Hopefully in 10 years when it approaches its drinking window, I'll have another chance to try this wine

  • 2009 Lokoya Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder 92 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Mt. Veeder

Although it was poured blind, it screamed Big-But-Balanced Napa Cab. Tannins were resolved and softened . Nothing to complain about, but it was a little boring and one dimensional.
