Easter Family and Friends Lunch

Flight 1 - The old one (1 Note)

  • 1964 Domaine Pélaquié Côtes du Rhône Villages Laudun Blanc

France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Villages Laudun

    What a wine !

I found this bottle in my grand-parents cellar, it was a gift from the producer for their wedding (1966)! The cork, fill level and color was perfect! So I decided to open it for Easter lunch with family and friends!

This is the upper most example of reduction I've ever experienced, the wine smelled like burnt coffee beans or burnt nuts ! The wine was opened two days in advance and still smelled reduced 24h after being open.

I believe this wine has a majority of grenache blanc.

It is difficult to put words on the sensations, the wine is really coating the palate as if it were syrupy, no acidity whatsoever. I read Aubert De Villaine say "After this much years only the wine's soul reamins" and this is it.

Giving it a score would be useless, a nice experience.

Flight 2 - The middle aged one (1 Note)

  • 2003 Domaine Alain Patriarche Bourgogne-Aligoté 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne-Aligoté

Drunk just after Pelaquie Laudun 1964.
This 21 years old aligote seems rather young compared to the ancestor that came before.

Upon opening the wine smelled of bruised apples and brioche.

On the palate just a little acidity, buttery aromas, this feels almost like chardonnay.

You can really understand Meursault's specificity with this Aligote, it transcribes its terroir perfectly.

    Conclusion age your aligotes!

Flight 3 - The young one (1 Note)

  • 2020 Domaine Bunan Bandol Moulin des Costes 90 Points

    France, Provence, Bandol

This tasting note is about the red Moulin des Costes.

Brung by a friend for easter.

Quite a nice surprise as I hadn't tasted a Bandol red for years.

Upon opening the smell is very spicy and promising, we put it in a carafe for about an hour. The wine really opened up, it strikes how it is dominated by mourvedre, reminds me a bit of 'Le Diable' by Xavier Vignon, but this wine is a lot less powerful and wide.

It is really fine and easy drinking. Not the most complex or long wine, but a really drink!

Flight 4 - The Legend (1 Note)

  • 1946 Laberdolive Bas Armagnac Domaine de Jaurrey 100 Points

France, Southwest France, Gascony, Bas Armagnac

What a way to finish the Easter meal ! The digestif is older than the 1964 white wine !

    Just a perfect Armagnac.

It has dried fruits caracteristics, it is muscular, rich, wide on the palate but still fine and floral, a real iron fist in a velvet glove.

Those nectars really buy you a minute of eternity.

It is a really humbling experience, when started my wine/spirits journey, I'd never thought that I would give a 100 points ranking, yet at the moment it touched my lips I knew it.

It is a once in a lifetime experience. Cheers.
