Introduction

Dinner at home with my best friends. They brought the gourmet food and cooked wheras I spent the wine. A memorable event. Started in 2022 and planning to do this every year.

All non-sparkling wines (white + reds) were decanted for several hours.

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • NV Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut Rosé 92 Points

    France, Champagne

I am not too much into champagne and rose, but I really like this one. Fresh, a good amount of acidity and perfect as a starter to cheer. Probably the only champagne I will buy on a regular basis in the future. The wine cellar visit in Reims might have helped to get into this bottle. 😉

  • 2012 Wittmann Westhofener Kirchspiel Riesling Großes Gewächs 97 Points

    Germany, Rheinhessen

Wow! No signs of fatigue, round, fat, not petrol, not pale, but more on the colorful side. Was a perfect fit to lentil-salad with scallops. Sadly my last 2012 GG bottle. Its good that even low end German Rieslings age into something great.

Will age for some more years.

  • 2021 Orin Swift Mannequin 92 Points

    USA, California

Nice classy Chardonnay. Butter, Almond, fat. However, not really distinguishable and probably too expensive for what it delivers. I stick to my favourite Cal Chardonnay 689 Submission for 14€.

  • 2020 Orin Swift Slander 92 Points

    USA, California

My first new world pinot. The same as for the Orin Swift Chardonnay applies here: Nice, round, fruity, well done, but not really distinguishable and too expensive for what it is.

  • 2018 Domaine de Chevalier 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Good left bank Bordeaux. I expected it to be more on the expressive side. Too young – of course. Might have a wonderfull future. 93

  • NV Guenin Champagne Liliale Blanc de Blancs 90 Points

    France, Champagne

Quite ok. Had it for ‘General’ (Champagne with lemon sorbet, eating / drinking with a spoon as an intermediate course. Nothing memorable. Bought it last year in Reims in a big champagne shop directly right beside the cathedral.

  • 2016 Shafer Relentless 96 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

What a treat. Everyone was smelling at the wines in this blind tasting and this one was already the groups favorite. Wonderful matured, expressive, vanilla, class, wood, fruit. Luckily this is on the market for 77€ at the moment (famous shop in Sylt), so I already bought more. Definitely in my top 10 list (being a humble wine drinker)

  • 2022 Vietti Roero Arneis 88 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Roero

Had this typical bitterness in the finish, thats why the group didnt like it very much. Guess thats typical for a Piemont Arneis. And probably the reason why this graope will not earn a lot of fame. Wouldn't buy again.

  • 2020 Cheval des Andes 93 Points

Argentina, Mendoza, Lujan de Cuyo, Vistalba

Had probably the highest expectations for this wine considering the price and the exuberant tasting notes here on cellartracker. Was quite disappointed. High class, introvert, of course too young. I just cannot understand why you can rate this wine a 100 points, even better than a Solaia, Masseto or Sassicaia. But – well – people and tastes are different, which is goof. Would like to try a 15 year old version of this. However, I will probably not spending the money again for this.
    93+

  • 2015 Rocca di Montegrossi Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Marcellino 94 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

Same notes as two years ago. Evolved even more, no signs of fatigue, was even better the next day. So it will improve even further. I don’t see any near end of the drinking window. A treat. A ‘wow’ wine!

Closing

Fantastic night with fantastic company, high class food (and chefs of course) and two winners (by far: The 2012 Wittmann Kirchspiel GG and the 2016 Shafer Relentless). Again next year? I am in!

PS: Seems I am getting more and more into matured wines (red and white). What hasn’t changed that I don’t understand what the Champagne fuzz is all about…
