Introduction

An excellent opportunity to try a shed load of Australian Pinot's and get an idea of what the general move is amongst producers at this excellent tasting.

  • 2023 Pooley Pinot Noir

    Australia, Tasmania

    Very slightly sour smoky black fruits, a little ashy whole bunch, bonfire and Lapsang Souchong. Juicy, dense, a little disjointed on the palate, chewy tannins are drying, slightly coarse. Time? Hmm.

  • 2021 Apsley Gorge Vineyard Pinot Noir

    Australia, Tasmania, East Coast

    Very slight volatile acidity, a little cherry, slightly oxidised notes, sweet spice, meaty underpin. Sourly juicy creates the impression of medium plus intensity acidity, red fruit is non delineated, alcohol warmth, chewy tannins. Disjointed. Ugh.

  • 2023 Stefano Lubiana Pinot Noir Primavera

    Australia, Tasmania, Southern Tasmania

    Meaty, funky, red berry fruit, touch of lozenge/jubey fruit, earthy. Funky, slightly hoppy with red hued fruits on the palate, silky tannins. <shrugs>

    Whole bunch ashy & menthol ashy notes dominate the nose and, alas, the palate. Not for me for at least the next 10 years

  • 2020 Lowestoft Pinot Noir

    Australia, Tasmania

    popped and poured, meaty wild ferment over non-delineated red fruits. With air the fruit gets more candied showing strawberry in a similar way to the Moondarra Studebaker. In the mouth it's fruit sweet, strawberry, raspberry, silky tannins. Long. Hmm. Nice if you like this kind of thing.

    A little wood glue, caramel, a little sour red fruit. Not a promising nose. Palate equally unpromising. Nah.

    Medium minus intensity aromas of red over black fruit, earthy, slightly meaty. Medium plus intensity acidity, slightly green tannins, it's a touch sour on the palate. Meh.

    Slightly sour red cherry, a little spice, earth; simple nose. Slightly sour on the palate as well, black tea tannins are drying, fruit persists, tiny ashy note on the finish. Hmm.

    struck match, volatile acidity, farmyard stench. Dirty nose. A little sweet red fruit is dominated by those funky attributes and some drying powdery tannins. Nah.

    Slightly volatile acidity, sour cherry, rhubarb, meaty underpin. Medium plus intensity acidity, tangy, savoury, fruit very slightly sour, touch bitter on the finish, powdery tannins outlast the fruit. Meh.

    Medium minus intensity tannins shows a little cherry, earth. Juicy/fleshy, generous on the palate, integrated talc textured tannins, pretty good.

  • 2022 Gembrook Hill Pinot Noir J. K. M.

    A little polished oak, ripe cherry with a slight sour cherry underpin, a little earthy. Meaty note and a touch of carbo crush. A little soft acidity, muted fruit, oak lends some bitterness. Disappointing palate after the nose. Nah.

    Dilute red berry fruit, sweet spice, lightweight nose. Prettier on the palate, red hued fruits, cherry, tannins are bit too much at the mo' though. Time. Hmm today.

    Whole bunch, wild ferment, earth/dirt. Juicy, fleshy, slightly sour, juicy, tannins too much for the fruit; quite drying rasp. Time (?) Nice nose though.

  • 2023 Mulline Pinot Noir Portarlington

    Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Geelong

    Whole bunch ashiness dominates dilute blackberry, sweet spice, earthy notes. In the mouth it's juicy, fleshy, whole bunch ashiness present with non delineated fresh black fruits but that really 'pop, tannins are a coarse flour rasp. Whole bunch more balanced on the palate. Yum.

    Savoury, meaty, the whole bunch less obvious, bright wild red berries strawberries especially. Juicy, fleshy generously fruited (strawberry again), black tea textured tannins. Yum

    An almost caramel oak note is quite off putting, cream, vanilla. In the mouth it's almost porty, dense, over-extracted. Nah.

    Wild ferment, volatile acidity don't detract from the bright red cherry fruit ably supported by ashy stalks. In the mouth it's fresh, fleshy, juicy, slightly dilute fresh red cherry, silky burr, balanced, okay.

    Slightly funky, dark hued fruits, a little almost coffee, slight whole bunch, wild ferment, a sense of warmth; baked earth. Very slight volatility, plenty of textured grip is woody but overall balanced. Okay

  • 2023 Moondarra Pinot Noir Studebaker

    Reductive red hued fruits have a confected quality, touch of sweet spice. Palate reflects this, tannic but this is all about quite jammy, fruit lozenge fruit that, on the palate, shows strawberry…blind this could almost be a Grenache.

    Like the Studebaker quite jammy nose but with more oak and a slightly savoury underpin. A little wood glue note joins the pretty confected fruit and chalky tannins. Hmm

    Slightly dilute, meaty, earthy, touch of forest floor, black over red berry fruit. Nice nose. Juicy, slightly dilute on the palate as well, similar fruit profile with integrated talc textured tannins are drying, fleshy, time. Nice.

    A little savoury and funky, quite meat in fact wild ferment. On the palate it's slightly disjointed wild ferment, tannins are slightly too large for the fruit which is present. Pretty. Time? But already had four years. Hmm.

Closing

Well, whole bunch is, for the most part, now well managed, and the use of oak judicious and supportive, but producers still seem to be struggling with wild ferment.
