• 2011 Domaine Denis Mortet Fixin Vieilles Vignes

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Fixin

  From Coravin. Earth, red over black fruits, cherry over berry, touch of forest floor, slight leather, distant bonfire. Juicy, fleshy, tertiary notes are just beginning to take charge of the primary fruits, long with silky tannins. Drink up but yum.

• 2016 Domaine Denis Mortet Fixin Vieilles Vignes

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Fixin

  From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas of rec cherry fruit with strawberries, slight floral lift, pinch of herbaceousness, a little sweet spice, pretty nose though with time this is joined by some blood. Juicy, fleshy, same fruit profile as nose, raw silk tannic rasp, simple, medium plus length, charming, yum.

• 2017 Domaine Denis Mortet Fixin Vieilles Vignes

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Fixin

  From Coravin. Blood, slightly metallic notes, red cherry with a little brambles, smidge of forest floor, earthy, tiny touch of wood glue, fruit grows with time in glass, a more savoury and slightly brooding version of the 2016; brambly fruit, forest floor, a little woody quality all serve to add complexity here as well. Very good.

• 2003 Château Angélus

  France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

  From Coravin. Slightly dried out and baked black plums with red berry and a little cherry in support, sweet spice, polished oak integrated, a little leather, rusk, slight almost mulchy note, a little tomato leaf. Juicy, fleshy it feels a little clumsy on the palate, dried fruit is a little muted, touch of mint, plenty of slightly woody grip and breadth. Decant and drink up

• 2009 Château Angélus

  France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

  From Coravin. Slightly stewed ripe black hued fruits, cream, polished oak very present sill offering sweet spice, clove, nutmeg, pinch of cinnamon, caramel, vanilla, milk chocolate, rich, ripe. Concentrated ripe, liquorice, a little tapenade join the plentiful oak and less baked fruits on the palate, tannins are silky but drying, creamy finish is long. More time to integrate...oak too much?

• 2010 Château Angélus

  France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

  From Coravin. Plums, blackberry, a little fruit lozenge, touch of herbaceous and red berry (raspberry & strawberry) sits on a comfortable oak barrel, a sense of freshness; more compote than jam on the nose, positively elegant compared to the 2003 and the 2009. In the mouth it's fleshy, generous oak more to the fore, offering a little plain chocolate and black coffee, fruit as per the nose, tannins are drying, woody, though still quite silky textured, mouth filling, finishes creamy, broad. Approachable now with a couple of hours decant but hold to integrate further. Yum.

• 1998 Château Haut-Bergeron Sauternes

  France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

  From Coravin & 500ml. Orange and apricot, a little marmalade and sweet spice in support, smells more fresh than opulent. Juicy acidity, lusciously sweet, baked apricot, drying woody, coarse flour texture, sugar very slightly too hight for the acidity, slight orange, vanilla and honey on the finish. Nice.

• 2001 Château Haut-Bergeron Sauternes

  France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

  From Coravin. Oof, a little stewed fruit, touch of wood glue, smidge of cellar stink, with agitation a touch of cream, apricot jam, muted mandarin/tangerine marmalade, vanilla but also a floral blossom note. Medium plus intensity acidity offsets luscious sweetness, plenty of drying woody trip which proves slightly coarse, thick cut orange marmalade dominates the flavour profile with slight bitterness as well, long, complex, wonderful.

• 2013 La Chartreuse de Coutet

  France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

  From Coravin. From half bottle. Lightweight, candied pineapple as well as some orange, orchard fruit especially apple here as well, a little blossom, sweet spice, touch of clay/earth. Juicy, fresh, sweet; sugar too light for the acid, a little bitterness, pineapple, orange, orchard fruit less present, softly textured burr, slight non-intrusive alcohol warmth on the finish. Pleasant.

• 1997 Château Coutet Barsac

  France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

  From Coravin. From 500ml bottle. Medium minus intensity aromas are a little herbaceous, biscuit, with agitation plenty of sweet oak spice, muted fruit offers a little apricot, cinnamon; opens with time, touch of damp cellar wet earth, baked sugar. Juicy tends to medium plus intensity acidity, lusciously sweet, slightly smoky notes, plenty of sweet spice, fruit shows slightly muted apricot tart with cinnamon, baked sugar, pastry, slightly compelling, interesting.

• 1989 Château Suduiraut

  France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

  From Coravin. From half bottle. Rich, dusty spices; almost a little sumac, sweet spice, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, baked sugar, with time and agitation a slightly spiritous note; more grand marnier than orange marmalade , apricot jam. Juicy, lusciously sweet, positively thick on the palate even straying to the soupy, flavours as per nose but not really any delineation. Feels a bit cumbersome. Meh.

• 1980 Château Suduiraut

  France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

  From Coravin. Wet clay, meaty, damp cellar with time some cream, fresh herbs, mint, tiny touch of citrus opens to show light orange marmalade. Medium plus intensity acidity is a little high for the fruit, the damp cellar, translates here as well, touch of coffee bitterness, cream, muted fruits, dead or thereabouts to be honest, not flawed just done.

• 2010 Château Guiraud

  France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

  From Coravin. Baked, slightly stewed fruit, orange blossom, lemon and lime marmalade, sweet spice, touch of vanilla, very slight almost resinous quality with meaty underpin, cream, lusciously sweetness is on the cusp of being too much for the acid, rich, generous, touch of apricot, lemon, lime and orange marmalade, a little candied peel on the finish. Nice.

• 1995 Château Filhot

  France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

  From Coravin. Initially it smells like a floral toilet block, very slightly burnt sugar, orange marmalade, made with muscovado sugar, blossom, quite floral. With time a touch of orange peel. That peel note more obvious on the palate. Medium plus intensity acidity is too hight for the residual , lending a certain tartness, ridiculously long with a pleasing tannic rasp. Begs something fatty

Served a couple of wines blind for a bit of fun at the end.

Vanessa picked the riesling as German, but plumped for a Spatlese level with a little more age
Peta nailed the Quarts de Chaume (Coteaux du Layon) and picked the vintage as well.

Wish my nose and palate were that good.

  Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

  From Coravin. From half bottle. A little sweaty note over green and red apples; quince, kumquat, a little unripe nectarine, custard apple. Medium plus intensity acidity, residual sugar, sweet apples, harmonious but still young, simple. Medium plus length, a little baking spice on the finish as well as a little custard apple. lots of time but yum.

• 1997 Château de Suronde Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru

  France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru

  From Coravin. From 500ml bottle. Slight oxidised bruised apple, lemon, baked sugar, cinnamon, touch of dry ginger, almost a little sherried rancio note, baked tarragon. Juicy, fleshy, less obviously oxidised on the palate, a little lemon curd, sugary sweetness, simpler on the palate than on the nose. Non-intrusive alcohol warmth on the finish, joined by a little lemon marmalade. Yum.
