The end of a coravined bottle - somehow seemed in better balance than before - less of a sour cherry finish, less obviously boozy mouthfeel - but also maybe just a little less exciting. Nonetheless - when people tell you you should drink more midrange claret you should listen (and you should also ask them which ones - because there's still a lot of dross out there).
From half. Bit of a nightmare week at work - and what do nightmares need? 2001 Ardanza, that's what. Colour garnet, no bricking. On the nose - intense dark notes, something almost tarry and some fruit and spice. On the palate - great structure, the fruit is still there and some real generosity on the finish. But my overwhelming impression is of the slight...funk? Musty character? You know how when there's *just* enough Brett to make it interesting? This has just enough - old wine characteristics to make it interesting.
Over time it blows off and becomes more classically excellent - but I think the first, funkier sips were the most enjoyable. Still doing the business in halves, I'm sure the bottles will go on for decades and to my friends with this wine in magnum...please share, any decade now.
