  • NV Dehours Champagne Terre de Meunier Extra Brut

    Hmm. Well. I was responsible for bringing the champagne, and accidentally took the wrong bottle from the fridge. Someone said vinegar and, yes. No bubbles, an incongruous umami element and the strong suspicion that this is more natural than it needs to be. Sorry chaps.

  • 2018 J.A. Ferret Pouilly-Fuissé Tournant de Pouilly Cuvée Hors-Classe

    Oh this is lovely. Energy. Concentration. Length. A slight almost synthetic fruit note at the end - a great taster at the table informed that this was esters. I think I enjoyed this more than some others at the table - and oddly, it reminded me of the Riverby I'm drinking while writing these notes, which one of my fellow diners also hates...

  • 2017 Mickaël Bourg Cornas Les P'tits Bouts

    After a '21 from this house was deemed unacceptable, this was double decanted and brought to the restaurant. Fully ripe fruit but in no way flabby - a kind of tautness, like an athlete in their 30s who no longer competes, looks a little more like the rest of us but...still has that native zeal and poise. A little thrilling - somewhat redolent of Allemand for me.

    Brought to answer the question "do these EVER get ready?"

    Ooh yeah, this is right in the zone. Someone said "apollonian" and I pretended to understand what he meant. There's an upright, almost stoic energy to this, real structure, but also some breadth. Elegant fruit. Someone said redolent of 90s Chave - I have little experience of that but - sounds good to me. No rush to drink these but my gosh they're good.

  • 2011 Bernard Levet Côte-Rôtie Les Journaries / Maestria

    On pouring - lovely structure, a whiff of the farmyard, good fruit, and a kind of easy drinkable character that I really associate with the 2011 Peroline from the same house (of which I've been lucky enough to have drunk a few).

    Then. With time the feral turns to fecal. Somehow not quite right. Ended up not being finished. Not a bad wine (and indeed the joy given by the early glasses was real...) but. Something amiss there.

  • 2002 Domaine de Montille Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens

    Popped and poured. A whiff of funk. Is that TCA? No, no it can't be. No, no it isn't. Whatever it was blew off and underneath - this is so lovely, structured yet delicate. There's real concentration here - somehow a lot of material packed in, although oddly it's not super long so much, as, there's just a lot. Perfectly mature, perfectly lovely. WOTN.
