Introduction
Taking a leaf from my birthday dinner last year, the generous host provided all the wines (including my bucket list Monfortino). Favourites were indeed the Monfortino, along with the Ca d'Morissio and Drouhin Musigny. For posterity, we all failed miserably to identify the first Musigny flight as Burgundies but to be fair they did show much more like northern Rhone / Piedmont at first.
2005 Podere Rocche dei Manzoni Piemonte Chardonnay Valentino Brut Zero Riserva 90 Points

Accidentally saw the cork so didn't guess. Youthful and made in such a way that it was a dead ringer for a champagne. Too tropical and oxidative for my liking, wouldn't have thought Chardonnay. Others liked this a lot but ultimately not very exciting in my opinion.

From the same person / batch as my previous note but thought this was much more representative. Reductive gunflint notes on the nose; lean citrus fruit of '13. Not ready and a long way to go.

2007 Joseph Drouhin Musigny 95 Points

Was a weird one at first - a cross between Piedmont and northern Rhone and much more advanced (guessed 90s). Eventually got going and put on elegance and the fresh strawberry fruit of Chambolle / Drouhin. Fantastic elegance and made in a style that was most in my wheelhouse out of the Musignys tonight, i.e., the most Chambolle of Chambolles. Agree fully with a previous taster who said this possessed the depth but not length of a Musigny, but this was such a pretty wine that it stole my heart tonight (wanted to revisit but was the first to be emptied so..).

2007 Domaine Jacques Prieur Musigny 94 Points

An ugly duckling that blossomed into a swan - ok not quite as bad, but thought this was quite tannic and masculine at first that made me guess the common plot of the flight was Bonnes Mares. Got better with air as the texture gained silkiness and the dark fruit became prettier. Not the biggest fan of this producer but this surprised me tonight.

2007 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru 91 Points

Weird liquorice note at first that blew off, gained elegance like the others in the Musigny flight but didn't ever quite catch up. Someone astutely commented that this might have been more extracted than the Musigny to make up for the young vines' lack of depth that caused the wine to lack elegance.

2007 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes 94 Points

Showed similarly to a superb '02 from the same generous host that I had a couple of years ago. A wine dominated by smoky dark fruit and structure such that my first thought was mid-00s Chave. Just missing the ethereal red-fruited nature of the best Burgundies.

2000 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino 96 Points

Declared this as my favourite (and the only wine I guessed right because of my knowledge of the host) from the start and its position didn't change during the course of the evening. Seductive, aromatic nose of earthy dark red cherries; beautiful purity and concentration of fruit on the palate. Masculine for sure which I don't normally appreciate, but definitely a wine that stops you in your tracks. A very complete wine.

2000 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Riserva Le Rocche del Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba 90 Points

From magnum. Cloudy in colour, palate had the structure and tannins of Nebbiolo but not the gravitas of a Giacosa red label. Unfortunately a miss on Giacosa roulette.

1996 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 95 Points

Pretty red fruit with some tea-like tannins that made me think the pair was Giacosa with this being the white label, and the other the red label. So perfumed and red-fruited that made me like this more than the others, albeit missing the depth of the superb Ca d'Morissio. Would have loved to follow this wine more; I am a big fan of this sort of understated style that tends to get lost in big tastings.

An absolute blockbuster of a wine that reminded me of the best Giacosa red labels. Masculine tannins but with a purity of fruit that made it an iron fist in a velvet glove sort of wine. So complete, balanced and youthful, it definitely has a long way to go. My favourite along with the Monfortino today.

1997 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 92 Points

One for the road from the generous host. I guessed Laurent because of the unintegrated oak and distinct brett / VA that gave it a cola note, so when it was revealed to be a Rhone I thought it was a Sorrel. Elegant briney dark fruit, but no Chave magic here today; thought the acidity in particular was out of balance.
