Introduction

It has been far too long since I visited Jeff. I think the last time was in 2011 amazingly?!?

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • NV Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée Edition 163eme

    France, Champagne

Yumm, a nice way to start. Exactly what you want from an MV Krug with a bit of age. Yeast and baking bread, precision, really mellowing and maturing nicely.

  • 1959 Clos du Mont-Olivet Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Wow! Smoky and meaty, grilled plum, a deep core of pure fruit, really full but so spicy, silky and resolved. This just kept improving, what a glorious wine!

  • 1955 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

A horrific looking bottle, low fill, a leaker. But this is surprisingly alive, iron and tobacco, wow SPICY cedar. It is a little muddy but surprisingly drinkable. It gets a bit more stern with air, dark/brooding personality. This was never great but certainly quite interesting.

  • 1950 Château Lynch-Bages

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Spicy, green, mint, tobacco, cherry core, really crazily nice aromatics with that mint just popping. Nice acidity, fresh. A bit short and certainly not a great vintage but a really proper claret.

  • 1982 Château Haut-Brion

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Almost primary after two Bordeaux from the 50's. Smoky, plummy, mmmm really deep, pure. Almost unnaturally dark. I am used to the 82 HB being a bit more pale and less full throttled than this example.

  • 1982 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle Flawed

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Very cloudy and sadly totally shot.

  • 1989 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Oh yeah, deep, spicy, dense, mmmm, intense, really pure, surprisingly young (do these Hommage ever age and shed weight?). This is such a different profile than the regular Beaucastel.

  • 1985 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Ahhh, here we go, a very proper La Chapelle. Smoky, meaty, dusky and fantastic.
