A selection of Rhone's (north and south) to have a look at
Hmm, The Chave was the wotd but, upon reflection, I wonder if that was the company it was keeping...
2022 Stéphane Ogier Côtes du Rhône Le temps est venu Blanc
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
A little green almond, waxy notes, stone fruit - apricot, a touch of leesy notes. Fleshy, fruit slightly muted in the mouth, touch of sulphur and mid palate burr. Non intrusive alcohol warmth on the finish

2022 E. Guigal Côtes du Rhône Blanc
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
Peach, apricot, a little creamy note , touch of sweet spice and peach stone. Quite rich in the mouth, dense, stone fruit, just the right side of bitterness, a little alcohol warmth on the finish, soft mid palate rasp, quite short.

2019 Stéphane Ogier Condrieu Les Vieilles Vignes de Jacques Vernay
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
Rich, vanilla, apricot tends to poached, sweet spice. More of the same on the palate, a little fresh ginger here as well, talc textured grip, broad, surprisingly this is less viscose than the nose implied. Interesting. Okay.

2020 E. Guigal Côtes du Rhône
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
blackberry, a little cream, strawberry and raspberry here as well, all quite jubey. Pretty nose. Juicy, fleshy, generously fruited, a little peppery underpin lends savoury complexity, tannic rasp feels mostly grape derived, touch of black tea to those tannins. Yum.

2020 Château de Beaucastel Côtes du Rhône Coudoulet de Beaucastel
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
Dark hued fruit, earthy, plummy. Juicy, dense and chewy initially on the palate, a little savoury underpin, drying tannins, it's a bit out of whack at the moment.

2021 Domaine la Barroche Vin de France Liberty
France, Rhône, Vin de France
Red hued fruits, meaty underpin, touch of lavender, baked herbs, sweet spice. Juicy, fleshy, savoury red fruits; a touch of cherry joins the strawberry notes and both tend to compote, tannins woody, coarse flour textured, non intrusive alcohol warmth on the finish, Okay

2021 Domaine Charvin Côtes du Rhône (Le Poutet)
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
Pretty red berry fruit backed by a touch of Bretty horse shit tending to slurry, smidge of sweet spice and meaty notes here as well. Chalky drying tannins close down the palate before anything else can get a toehold, a little farty fruit starts to show on the finish. Meh.

2020 Château Mont-Redon Lirac
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Lirac
Savoury, smells dense, concentrated, touch of charred meat, roasted capsicum and baked plums. That savoury concentration travels to the palate, quite chalky drying tannins, baked herbs join the other attributes here.. Crikey. Time

2021 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape Télégramme
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Ripe concentrated red fruits are quite jammy, sweet spice, a little caramel. Juicy, jammy red hued fruits; strawberries, a little ripe red plums, raw silk textured tannins are super persistent and quite woody. All travels very long assisted by the alcohol warmth. Nice.

2022 Domaine Font de Courtedune Côtes du Rhône Villages
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Villages
Strawberry compote, raspberry in support, plenty of sweet spice; cinnamon, touch of alcohol prickle. In the mouth it's quite fleshy with a savoury underpin to the fruit which is reinforced by slightly bitter tannins which, though silky, are quite drying and lend some rustic clumsiness to the finish.

2020 Domaine la Soumade Rasteau
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Rasteau
Savoury, meaty, dense smelling red fruits, a little garrigue and baked rock, lie the Courtedune this is a bit on the rustic side. It's quite savoury, coarse and, well, rustic on the palate as well, drying tannins are chewy, fruit quite muted. It's the kind of wine that needs food and for me to be a grubby peasant frame of mind.

2020 Domaine Santa Duc Gigondas
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas
Savoury red and black fruits, quite spiced though without being overtly oaked. Interesting. In the mouth it's fleshy, juicy, red and black fruits, savoury spices, touch of bitterness to the drying tannins with a tiny little cocoa powder quality. Hmm.

2020 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de mon Aïeul
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Cream, polished oak offers caramel, sweet spice, behind this ripe red berried fruit. More of the same on the palate; ripe red fruits are both jammy and slightly more ascendant. Woody oak tannins offer texture and associated flavours. Alcohol lends pepperiness to the finish.

2022 Domaine de la Roche Paradis Saint-Joseph La Bergerie
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Saint-Joseph
A little crushed rock, smoky notes, smidge of green peppercorns, blue and blackberry fruits. Juicy, quite bitter on the palate belying the generosity of the nose, tannins are drying, woody, the impression is muddy and clumsy. What a pity.

Tiny Volatile notes, touch of wild ferment funkiness, fresh blackberry fruit, pink & green peppercorns, savoury spices. Juicy, slightly sour black fruits, coarse flour textured tannins are drying, fruit just about carries with a little peppery note. Hmm.

2022 Domaine Yves Cuilleron Saint-Joseph Lyseras Blanc

Slightly waxy, stone fruit, cream, simple but charming nose. Juicy, fleshy, tangy, textured grip, non delineated stone fruit. Simple here as well, unsurprisingly. Okay.

2021 Yann Chave Crozes-Hermitage
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage
Like the Cuilleron a touch of volatility, funky and meaty notes, sour smelling black fruits; berry; plums, touch of fruit lozenge. Juicy, earthy, savoury spices, slightly sour black fruits, talc textured tannins persist long with these fruits, slight alcohol warmth intrudes on the finish. Hmm.

2020 J.L. Chave Sélection Saint-Joseph Offerus
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Saint-Joseph
Meaty, touch of sulphur/bacon fat prickles the nose, fresh blackberry, crushed rock, slightly wild ferment funk and whole buch ashiness are supporting components as are savoury earthy notes. In the mouth it has medium plus intensity acidity, a sense of concentration without loss of focus tannins are a powdery rasp, subdued alcohol lends peppery noes, all travel long with fresh dark hued fruis, Balanced. Very good.

2021 Domaine la Roubine Côtes du Rhône Villages Sablet La Grange des Briguières
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Villages Sablet
Jubey and peppery, black and red berry fruit lozenges, clean and pretty fruit bomb nose. Juiicy, fleshy, fruit driven, talc textured raps on the mid palate, alcohol warmth helps carry the fnish where it eventually dominates. Nice except the alcohol warmth - half an hour in the fridge before consuming should resolve that problem.
