Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2002 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 94 Points

    France, Champagne

Golden color, surprisingly no bead but still effervescent; aromatic, biscuit and brioche; full bodied, richer styled, slightly oxidative, prominent sparkles, brioche, some lemon peel; finish is medium-long. Very nice, as expected for the style for Pol Roger. Ready to drink but will also last easily a decade. 93
Chilled now, and with some air. Lovely bead, refreshing throughout, even better than earlier. 94

  • 2013 Domaine Dujac Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Gruenchers 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Light ruby, age appropriate bricking; aromatic, pretty, red fruited, spices; palate is light bodied, youthful tannin, red fruited, high acidity, medium alcohol, well balanced, less fruit than on the nose; finish is medium-long. Very aromatic nose, palate needs some more time to open. 92-93

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Light bodied, youthful color; medium intensity aromatics, red fruited, spice; balanced light-medium palate, high acidity, balanced alcohol and tannin; medium length finish. Not quite as complex as the Dujac but very nice and well balanced, with time ahead of it. 91

  • 1995 R. López de Heredia Rioja Gran Reserva Viña Bosconia 94 Points

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

Beautiful color, light ruby, significant bricking; aromatic, high intensity and complexity, savory, tamari/soy; elegant, light bodied, excellent acidity, balanced alcohol, wonderful maturity; long finish. This holds up compared to other wines at the table, stellar as my past taste of this has been. 94

Double decanted 4 hours, ruby-purple; high intensity aromatics, seems cab franc predominant with savory herbal, blackberry, mint; palate is full bodied, smooth and richly textured, balanced medium acidity, medium alcohol (14%); long finish. This is really lovely Bordeaux. 95-96+

  • 1928 Château Climens 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

Deep tawny, high shoulder, opened because the cork had fallen into the bottle though the capsule had an excellent seal; aromatic, some crème brûlée, slight caramel, burnt brown sugar, toffee; palate is medium bodied, almost dry, good botrytis, caramel without being sweet, touch of brown sugar, superb fresh acidity throughout; long finish. Fabulous complexity, and rare to try a sauternes this old. My last bottle of this improved with air, so I will try again with dinner. 94-95
6 hours decanted: even more complex with treacle, burnt caramel, really fantastic nose and palate, still with the same impeccable balance and at absolute peak. Wonderful, wonderful Sauternes. 96
