Cedric Bouchard dinner at Praellum, Singapore

Party of 8 gathered at Praellum wine bar to attend themed Cedric Bouchard dinner courtesy of the owners of Praellum.

Paul M. of the importer explained the history and philosophy of the domaine before we proceeded with the 2+ flights. One of the esteemed guest advised that a nearby restaurant had the Rose de Jeanne #2 on their list and so it got delivered to us triggering a raucous applause.

• 2020 Roses de Jeanne / Cédric Bouchard Champagne VV/R20

  France, Champagne

  Nose is flinty/reductive. Sulphur. This is subtle and pairs well with the Pinot Noir flavor profile. Adds pepper and smoke to the bruised apple. This creates intrigue. Probably the Bouchard cuvee I like every time.

• 2018 Roses de Jeanne / Cédric Bouchard Champagne BO/R18

  France, Champagne

  Pinot Blanc. Very different flavor profile from the 3 mainstream Champagne grape varieties. Mushroomy, heady oxidative sherry-like quality. Medium complexity. Certainly singular but underwhelming considering the greater heights reached by other Tier 1 grower Champagnes.

• 2018 Roses de Jeanne / Cédric Bouchard Champagne HL/R18

  Tasted alongside the Boloree from the same vintage. The winemaking is very similar as this shows too a heady oxidative nose. It is noticeably richer than Chards from the Cote des Blancs. Probably further amplified by the ripe 2018 vintage. I am wondering if the very discreet mousse of Bouchard wines does not result in less perceived freshness for ripe years. My relative value assessment is the same as for the Boloree. There are other Grower Champagnes packing more complexity at a lower price.

  Similar style to the Val Vilaine, only amped up and more complex. Reductive and flinty charachter complementing well Pinot Noir attributes. My favourite among the Bouchard Super cuvees tasted tonight. I would like to see how this gets polished with cellar aging.

  Left the table a bit perplexed as to how a wine can be so hyped up and yet consumers do not know what went into it other than Bouchard living up to his ethos of single grape/single vineyard/single year. The mystery bottle does nothing for me much like I hate to be tasting exalted wines blind. Palate fatigue had set in by the time we got to the RDJ 01 and 02 and as we went back and forth we could only observe that they were probably different grape varieties. Quality-wise consistent with Haute Lemble, Boloree and Usrule though the latter remained my favorite of the night

• 2018 Roses de Jeanne / Cédric Bouchard Champagne CE R/R18

  Very vinous certainly not cloying. Light red colour. Strawberry end of red fruit spectrum but not candied. Very good, well-made. Lots of sap. I like this as I am partial to Grower rose Champagne. On this showing this does not necessarily match my favorites from Bouzy and Ambonnay but I get the feeling this may grow a lot with aging.

I liked the Pinot Noir wines better i.e. Val de Vilaine, Ursules and Creux d'Enfer. It seemed to me that the wine-making was very different for those exhibiting reductive rather than oxidative notes. The non-Pinot cuvees were harder to read, possibly too young but not exhibiting at this stage the layered complexity you come to expect form one of the top 5 growers.
