1996 White Burgs at the SF Vintners Club

I drink White Burgs infrequently so I have limited experience with a lot of these producers; that said what ensued was one of the most bizarre experiences of my life. The wines as a whole were lifeless and tired, yet few people even mentioned anything. So strange and I guess I chalked it up to lack of knowledge or experience? The state of the wines was a giant elephant in the room, with no one seeming to want to mention it. When I mentioned it at my table, one other gentleman acknowledged he had heard something about it, but others gave me blank stares.

This is my first experience with this large a set of '96s and the "prem-ox" character. I was floored at how shot the wines were as a whole; there were varying degrees of ox but none of it good.

I do not know the provenance of the wines, but I would imagine that it would have been good, FWIW.

• 1996 Maison Champy Corton-Charlemagne Flawed

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

  Oxidized nose with a tough of nut. Oxidized mouth that is rich and dense with some mineral, but ultimately tired and ox.

• 1996 Michel Colin-Deléger et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes Flawed

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

  Horribly Oxidized, golden-brown color, nose was shot as was the mouth.

  Oxidized nose, some fruit showing though, but? Ox, dead and tired in the mouth.

• 1996 Domaine Antoine Jobard Meursault 1er Cru Charmes

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

  Matchstick, toasty nose with lemon and a floral element. Some slight 'prem-ox' with caramel and toast. Some life but seems slightly 'prem-ox'.

  Ox nose with vanilla and hazelnut. Some life, with mineral and lemon- but definite 'prem-ox' character

  Wool, lemon-lime, honey nose. Tired with aldehyde and fino notes. Another 'prem-ox'.

• 1996 Maison Albert Bichot Corton-Charlemagne Domaine du Pavillon Flawed

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

  Some lemon-lime on the nose, with a saline, sea air fresh nose. Some depth, with a bit of prem-ox, though there is mineral and tight acidity and a bit of wool character. Seems slightly prem-ox.

  Toast, lime, lemon and some salty/saline/sea air. Fresh with more saline, citrus and quartz-like elements. Because everything else was shot i though i got a light touch of 'prem-ox'? but a pretty good bottle.

  Honey, lemon pie/lemon curd, high-tone nose. This has some like with richness and lemon pie character, but there is some 'prem-ox' character that mars the finish.

  Sherry, old chard nose that smelled like oysters? Viscous with a film? Oily wine with loads of butter and vanilla (AM oak). Past it's prime.

Needless to say this was an eye opening experience. Curious as to the cellar regime at Jobard, as they were considerably fresher, but not without some signs.
