Introduction

On Gareth’s initiative, six of us met at Fitzrovia’s Noizé restaurant to drink Méo-Camuzet wines from our own cellars. We managed to put together a nicely varied selection, covering a range of different sites, with vintages from 1990 to 2016. Luckily, all bar one of the wines were on excellent form, and even the perhaps sub-par bottle of 1990 Clos Vougeot had its (considerable) charms.

Flight 1 - Aperitif (1 Note)

Flight 2 - Les Chaumes (2 Notes)

Flight 3 - Brûlées (2 Notes)

  • 1995 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Clos Vougeot 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

1/6 bought en primeur and kept in storage until July 2024. Dark ruby purple, clear and bright. Fresh, vibrant, vivid fruit, spicy (some stylistic comparison with 08 Chaumes drunk at the same meal). Lush and exotic. Sandalwood, orange peel, hints of cinnamon and mace. Real energy on the palate and great mouthfeel. Long finish. Fully mature, at peak. My WOTN.

  • 1990 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Clos Vougeot

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

1/6 bought en primeur and kept in storage until July 2024. Dark ruby, a bit cloudy. Somewhat muddy on the nose. Ethereal red fruits but also a bit oxidative. Fenugreek and liver. Nice mouthfeel. Light to medium weight but ample. Tertiary and perhaps not a pristine bottle, yet delightful in its way. I need to try this again so NR for now.

Flight 4 - Clos Vougeot (3 Notes)

  • 2016 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Inky purple. Ripe burly exuberant exotic. Really concentrated fruit but great purity and transparency of texture. Spice box aromas. Really began to sing with time in the glass. Outstanding and still on the up. My #3.

  • 2001 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Nice ruby-purple, showing appropriate age. Glorious nose with hallmark Méo-Camuzet opulence and exoticism, combined with purity and transparency. Somewhat pinched on the palate for my taste, a bit lean, with quite prominent acidity leaving its mark on the long, juicy finish. My #4 but likely to be the group’s #1. Outstanding.

  • 2014 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Echezeaux Les Rouges du Bas 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Fab nose encapsulating the luxuriant MC style: opulent, exotic, pure. Just let down a tad by a bit of caramel that came on later. Quite lean on the palate, relatively pronounced acid, maybe not the grip of some of the others, but still an outstanding wine. It may just be going through a phase. I’d certainly love to try it again in 5-10 years. Served semi-blind: asked to guess the vintage, I went for 2011. My #5.

Closing

All in all a splendid evening, with the Méo-Camuzet signature showing strongly across all the wines, though the accent here is very much on quality of fruit rather than the hand of the winemaker. The hallmarks for me were ripe, opulent blue and red fruit and exotic spicing, combined with purity and transparency. It was very hard to separate the wines in qualitative terms. With the exception of the possibly less than pristine 1990 Clos Vougeot, a plausible case could be made for any of the wines to be in the top three of the night. The wine gods were certainly smiling on us!
