Peter Bourne - Supper

Caught up with Peter and a few of the old cronies from his wonderful tastings to enjoy a lovely wine supper at MSB. Thankfully we were restricted from going too mad by their now strictly enforced one bottle per person rule.

• NV Larmandier-Bernier Longitude

  France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

  From magnum. Lemon, a little bread yeast, savoury umami notes. Soft mousse, mid palate burr, medium minus intensity flavours, a little muted citrus, bread yeast, simple. Long. Hmm.

• 2019 Domaine Weinbach Riesling Schlossberg

  France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

  medium minus intensity aromas of lime, waxy, a little lemon, opens with time in the glass to show more generosity; almost a little lemon curd with some green apple noters. Surprisingly softly juicy, tangy, fruit slightly muted, no intrusive alcohol warmth, travels long, less waxy and glycerol than the nose implied for me. Hmm.

• 2018 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume

  France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

  Lemon, a little herbaceous and smoky note, some minerality and a touch of a metallic note. Juicy tends to medium plus intensity acidity is in the citrus space, softly textured burr is raspy simple, a little bitter on the finish. Meh.

• 2019 By Farr Chardonnay

  Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Geelong

  Struck match, peachy stone fruit yoghurt, slight butter, sweet spice. More of the same on the palate with a citric tangy, plenty of tannic rasp that is a little drying, long. Big and bolshy. Totally divorced in style from their Pinot Noirs.

• 2014 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay

  Meaty, savoury with dark hued fruits, earthy notes, touch of forest floor. In the mouth it's juicy, fleshy, slightly welly dilute, textured mid palate rasp is powdery, savoury dark fruits, medium plus length. Lovely.

• 2014 Lucien Le Moine Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

  Smells quite roided; plenty of oak spice, non delineated black fruits, slightly meaty and gamey notes in support. Chewy dark hued fruits on the palate, textured grip is both drying and woody. It's a bit too big and unwieldy for me.

• 2014 Faiveley Chambertin-Clos de Bèze

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

  Medium minus intensity aromas feel a little closed; plummy, earthy, slightly funky and meaty but with a pretty jubey note and a little bacon fat. Very slightly sour red hued fruits on the palate, touch of bitterness. Again that sense that it is closed. Needs time or a decant.

• 1995 Vietti Barolo Castiglione

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

  Rose petal, slightly dried orange peel, red hued fruits show a little plum over cherry, slight alcohol prickle, a little earthy/leathery notes. Medium plus intensity acidity, drying tannins, but this is super fleshy and fresh, red hued fruits, those tannins are grainy, rasping on the mid palate. Long. Lovely. Glorious in fact.

• 2010 Château Palmer

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

  Decanted for about 90 minutes. Primary nose shows brooding black fruits; blackcurrant, plums, a little pencil shavings, sweet spice, a little raspberry note in the background. Medium plus intensity acidity, juicy, fleshy, chewy tannins over dark hued fruits, that raspberry note, persists ridiculously long. Years required. Possibly decades. Great promise.

• 2000 Wendouree Shiraz Mataro

  Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

  Fruit is slightly dried out & desiccated, a little eucalyptus, blackberry and black plum with a little black cherry, leather notes, beginning to get a touch of sous bois. Juicy, fleshy, red hued, cherry fruit textured grip is oak driven and a pleasing cats tongue rasp. Long. Lovely

• 2006 Château La Tour Blanche Sauternes

  France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

  Caramel, slight toffee apple, vanilla, apricot, a little lime, orange, tangerine marmalade, sweet spice, slight buttery notes. Juicy, plenty of woody textured, toffee apple has a slightly burnt sugar note on the finish. Nose offers more complexity than the palate but this is rather pleasant.
