Introduction
As Tomas had very kindly visited from Sweden I thought the least I could do would be to take him on a 2 day micro tour of Canberra district
Flight 1 - Clonakilla (9 Notes)
Probably, no, definitely the most globally known producer in the region
Flight 2 - Eden Road (8 Notes)
A bit of a favourite of mine. I warned Tomas about G's rambunctious enthusiasm only to find that he wasn't present and was no longer employed here.
Closing
A few good wines here - I did enjoy the Clonakilla Viognier - a return to form. Yum.
2023 Clonakilla Riesling

Sulphur less obvious than my last tasting, floral notes, orchard fruit, a little almost mandarin, pretty nose. A little more citric on the palate - lemon, sour green apple proves crisp and crunchy, sulphur, medium pls intensity acidity, in the 'lean' space but more integrated. Hmm.

2023 Clonakilla Sémillon Sauvignon Blanc

Gooseberry, a little cream, yoghurt, green apple, touch of fresh grass. Medium plus intensity acidity, a little textured burr on the mid palate, flavours are as per the nose and surprisingly generous, Tangy. Nice.

2022 Clonakilla Chardonnay Tumbarumba
Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Tumbarumba
Creamy and peachy; fruit sweet with slightly confected notes, dialled back good quality oak, very slight butter. On the palate it's a little lean; mandarin oil, orange, tannins are a bit coarse, drying rasp on the tongue, fruit doesn't really carry past this. Hmm.

2023 Clonakilla Viognier

Fresh apricots, a little sweet spice, freshly grated ginger in the background joined by rose petals, slight cream. Soft, juicy and fleshy on the palate, a little gentle silky burr, the flavours are a little muted but present and, with time in the glass, begin to grow. Pretty clever. Yum.

2023 Clonakilla Pinot Noir

Red berry and cherry fruit, jubey carbo crush lozenge notes, a little earthy forest floor, slightly mulchy notes accompany a smidge of woody bitterness. Juicy, fleshy, red hued fruits, talc textured tannins, balanced but a little lean and anonymous - in its defence it is very young. Currently an okay lunchtime Pinot Noir. Time will help

2022 Clonakilla Ballinderry

Pencil shavings, pyrazine, blackberry, blackcurrant, Parma violets, not really seeing the merlot on the nose. Medium plus intensity acidity, quite hard & a little green on the palate, foursquare, fruit muted, tannins are coarse, sandpapery, persistent. Hmm.

2022 Clonakilla Shiraz Hilltops

Slightly reductive and meaty, funky, touch of yeast and beef extract over red and black plum, alcohol prickles lends a spicy peppery note. Medium plus intensity acidity, non-delineated black fruits, chalky tannins are woody, touch of liquorice, medium length, Meh.

2023 Clonakilla Shiraz O'Riada

Plums, slight red currant, savoury spice, a little whole bunch savouriness, earthy notes, green and pink peppercorn. Sourly crunchy red and black fruits, medium pus intensity acidity, rocky wet stone tannins prove coarse and tight, chalky and rather dominate the fruit. Time will help but hmm for me today.

2022 Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier

Earthy, savoury, surprisingly it's a little muted…perhaps a touch of dusty glass isn't helping. With agitation it begins to begrudgingly open showing fresh red and blackberry fruit, a little sour snakes, peppery underpin, polished oak is well managed. Medium plus intensity acidity, plenty of coarse flour textured tannins dry out the palate, alcohol warmth helps carry he muted red & black hued fruit long, a little cream and black pepper on the finish. With more time the wine gains more body.
