Introduction

Welcoming back Nico VH to SG with the other Nico in tow. Turned out to be a semi-French dinner as Romain joined. Lots of fun, with the people and the wines!

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • NV Georges Laval Champagne Extra Brut Garennes 91 Points

    France, Champagne

Green apple, floral nose, quite fruit forward wit no secondary notes. The palate is linear, precise and mineral. Not my preferred style usually, but I'd grown to appreciate it more.

First time trying Laval. Think the higher level cuvees would show his style better.

  • 2020 Domaine de Bellevue (Jérôme Bretaudeau) Muscadet Gabbro Clos des Bouquinardières 89 Points

France, Loire Valley, Pays Nantais, Muscadet

Second time having this wine, quite a crowd pleaser. Fruit-driven and fleshy, with melon and peach on the nose. Mineral streak on the palate, less acid tension than I expected, broad body.

  • 2020 Tony Bornard Les Chassagnes 93 Points

    France, Vin de France

WOTN for me and for most of the table. A bit shy on the nose at first, it blossomed in the glass. White flowers, unripe pear and apple, with that slight jura funk which I love. Palate has very good tension, rich but not heavy, mineral.

  • 2018 Vodopivec Vitovska Origine Venezia Giulia IGT 89 Points

Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Venezia Giulia IGT

Having just been to Slovenia, I was familiar Vitovska. Skin contact for 6 months in amphora, surprising that it tastes more like a white.

Very clean. Yellow peach and bruised apple on the nose, rounded palate that was slightly bitter palate, short finish. Interesting, but wished for more acidity to balance out the broad texture.

  • 2021 Domaine Truchetet Côte de Nuits Villages 82 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Nuits Villages

Muted, weird nose that gave off vanilla at first - totally un-integrated. Then it became some raspberry, green and a bit peppery. Body is very thin, with unpleasant green-ess. 2021 is a weak vintage in Burgundy but this was exceptionally disjointed and strange.

  • 2020 Massa Vecchia Poggio a Venti Toscana IGT 89 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

A classic chianti nose, sour cherry veering on oxidative, dried italian herbs, blackberry, spices. Grippy tannins with quite a lot of power. Will get better with age.

  • 2022 Eastern Peake Syrah Walsh Block 88 Points

    Australia, Victoria, Western Victoria, Ballarat

Saw this around a lot in SG and Aus.

Very peppery and savoury, eucalyptus that reminds me of Aus shiraz but more elegant. Blackberry and plum core. Juicy body that avoids being jammy, plush tannins. Would like to see how this evolves with time.

  • 2020 Yann Bertrand Fleurie Coup D'Folie 88 Points

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Fleurie

Rounding off the night with a refreshing finish. Sour cherry on the nose and palate, cinnamon and white pepper. Smooth palate with plenty of acidity, just on the line of being too thin.
