Introduction

As Tomas and I were down in Canberra overnight we took the opportunity to catch up with my tasting/study buddy CBRWineGuy (Jordan) and wonderfully articulate taster Rote Kappelle (Sinclair)

Flight 1 - Spanish Reprise at Jordans (5 Notes)

Before supper we took the opportunity to look at some of the Spanish wines that Jordan and I had tasted the previous year as part of our Spanish study.

  • 2018 Zarate Rías Baixas Caiño Tinto

    Spain, Galicia, Rías Baixas

From Coravin. Slightly bretty, red berry , a little cherry, slight floral notes and a touch of stony minerality. Medium plus intensity acidity is slightly sharp, red hued fruits are crunchy and joined by a little red apple, chalky mineral tannins, tart. Meh

Flight 2 - Supper at Courgette (7 Notes)

Sinclair joined us for supper at Courgette and, with insider knowledge, had brought along some stemware…the rest of us drank from thick glassed fish bowls. Food was lovely though, as was the company and the wines. Pity about the Ampuis.

  • 2012 Mount Majura Riesling

Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District

Lime, kerosene, a little green apple, floral notes. Juicy, textured lime, grapefruit, orange, kerosene, quite linear.

  • 2017 Jermann Vintage Tunina Venezia Giulia IGT

Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Venezia Giulia IGT

  • 1982 Domaine de Chevalier

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

  • 1996 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Château d'Ampuis Flawed

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Cellar stink, corky notes grows with time. Slightly sour acidity married to fresh black berry fruits, grippy tannins offer a textured burr but also those cork notes which grow and grow and this is flawed. How sad.

  • 1982 Château Malartic-Lagravière

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Red and black fruit, the former cranberry, the latter blackcurrant, slightly dried out though the overarching impression is of freshness, a little leather, cigar box, slightly herbaceous, ripe without being overwrought. Fleshy, fresh, juicy, same fruit profile, tannins are silky, persistent, all travels long. Glorious.
