Introduction

We popped into a couple of wineries on the back to Sydney

Flight 1 - Mount Majura (9 Notes)

As we had had an older vintage Riesling for supper the previous evening we decided to pop in on our way to Lark Hill for an unplanned tasting

  • 2023 Mount Majura Riesling

Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District

Medium minus intensity aromas of lime, lemon, a little oyster shell, touch of sulphur and green apple. Medium plus intensity acidity, tiny touch of residual sugar means that this is fresh rather than sharp, citrus and sulphur. Simple.

Red hued fruits; cherry, strawberry, a little savoury spice with a peppery note. Juicy, fleshy, slightly tart red fruits, talc textured tannins, tiny touch of tobacco leaf. Okay.

  • 2022 Mount Majura Mondeuse

Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District

Red plums with black plum underpin, a little sweet spice, slightly candied notes. Juicy, fleshy, softly plummy, clean, slightly coarse tannins though this is quite a lightweight quaffer. <shrugs>

  • 2022 Mount Majura Shiraz

Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District

Bacon fat/struck match, muted fruit, meaty charcuterie and savoury, a little green underpin, touch of pepper. Wetly dilute, red and black fruits, drying woody tannins, touch of green herbaceousness on the palate as well. Meh.

  • 2023 Mount Majura T.S.G.

Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District

Jubey red fruits; strawberry, cherry, savoury spices shows a little pepper and, with time, charcuterie. Juicy tends to medium plus intensity acidity, red fruits again but with a tiny sour tang, tannins are chalky and fell mostly wood derived, a little alcohol warmth lends peppery spice to the finish. Hmm.

  • 2022 Mount Majura Tempranillo

Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District

Polished oak, red berry; strawberries, sweet spice, cream, touch of tobacco leaf. Juicy, fleshy, very slight sour underpin to the red hued fruits, chalky tannins are integrated, a little cream, soy sauce. Hmm.

  • 2022 Mount Majura Tempranillo Rock Block

Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District

Dusty glass, slightly reductive . With agitation baked earth, slight iron, red cherry fruit, dusty spices. Juicy acidity, tight tannins are raspy and drying, pulling against the palate, red fruits are slightly sour. Hmm.

Flight 2 - Lark Hill (6 Notes)

Out of the old shed and into the new for a rather good tasting. All of the whites were served very cold. Bumped into Peter at the tasting, utterly randomly.

  • 2023 Lark Hill Riesling

Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District

Medium minus intensity aromas of lime, green apple, a tiny smoky note, mineral, white flowers. Juicy, medium plus intensity acidity, feels dry but I think there is a touch of residual sugar here, fleshy, generous, wet stone texture, ripe green apple, citrus, slight sulphur, medium plus intensity length. Nice

  • 2022 Lark Hill Marsanne

Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District

  • 2021 Durant Vineyards Chardonnay Lark Vineyard

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

A little toast, butter, stone and citrus fruit, slightly wild ferment funkiness with a touch of meaty underpin. In the mouth it's a bit skinny, more citric, woody grip, a little anonymous. Meh.

  • 2019 Lark Hill Shiraz Viognier

Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District

Plums, blackberry, sweet spice, a little caramel, polished and ripe but with a tiny peppery note. Juicy, savoury, black fruits, liquorice, chalky tannins rasp the tongue and roof of the mouth, slight alcohol warmth on the finish <shrugs>.

  • 2022 Lark Hill Scuro

Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District

Medium minus intensity ashy whole bunch, blackberry, black pepper, a little red cherry, earthy, tarry notes. Juicy, fleshy, whole bunch translates to the palate with black over red fruits, savoury spice, integrated tannins, long, nice…lovely in fact.

  • 2017 Lark Hill Shiraz

Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District

Slightly oxidative nots accompany black hued fruits; plums, berries, a little cocoa, with a touch of charcuterie showing with agitation and time. The oxidative note is more intrusive in the mouth, dark fruits have a sweet core, drying but persistent tannins are a supporting element. Long but, for me, a fresher bottle is required.
