Morey St Denis vs Nuit-St-Georges

Rare to have these less glorified villages side-by-side. I'm a bigger fan of MSD, and was pleasantly surprised by some of the NSGs.

Didn't expect so many sparklings at an all-red dinner!

  Oxidative style, bruised apple, a bit of funk. Strawberry on the palate, which pointed to pinot. Rich texture. Enjoyed my first Prevost!

  Brioche, ripe apple, sprinkle of vanilla on the nose. Good acid tension and fruit concentration, still a house style.

  Wow, thought this was a champagne blend. Ripe apple and stone fruit, brioche and nuts suggested age. Goes to show how great top quality German sparkling can be.

• 2006 Lucie & Auguste Lignier Clos de la Roche 89 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

  Found the new oak quite prominent at first and quite tannic. Opened up over the course of dinner, more cherry and toasted wood, powerful structure and long finish. Not my preferred style, though it's well-made.

  An alluring nose: floral and strawberry with sweet spice. An elegant palate with blueberry and polished tannins. My favourite of the tasting, a young wine that I kept going back to.

• 1993 Lupé-Cholet Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Château Gris 88 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

  Brick colour and mostly tertiary: old leather, earth, dark cherry drops and that wild bramble. Strong-boned structure in a more rustic style, pointing to NSG.
  
  93 red burgs are good value and rare these days. This was a table favourite, but I found it too tertiary for my liking.

  Structured and masculine with well-integrated oak. Nose is floral and expressive with red berries, plum and Chinese spices. Good density on the palate but feels like it has yet to reveal its true potential. The first vintage of this plot from Cathiard.

  Strawberry nose, palate is very juicy, sweet cherry, finished off with elegant tannins, quite light-footed. Surprised this was an NSG.

• 2007 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains 89 Points

  Rather subdued nose, dark fruits, brooding. Tannins are still rough, so I thought it was the younger one of the 2 Gouges. It has good power on the palate, just felt it needed to open up more.

  Fresh and young, still primary, strawberry and cherry. Great palate with silky tannins. One of the liveliest wines of the night.

  More advanced than expected, some guessed late 1990s. I did like the floral and forest floor notes, though the palate is dusty and flat.

  Red fruited, floral nose, with some forest floor. Tastes younger than it is, still packed with fresh red berries on the palate, quite sensual. No green-ess or spicy-ness that scream Dujac.

  Strange nose of tea leaves and old cupboard that got some of us thinking "corked". Savoury and earthy. On the palate, it is very much alive, fine acid bones with some dried red fruits peaking through. A rare find and at this age, drinking decently well.

• 2016 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots 90 Points

  Youngest of the lot, I quite enjoyed this. Expressive nose of rose and bright cherry, with underlying earth and sweet spice. Ripe dark berries on the palate reminded me of new world pinots, balanced with high acidity. Still lots of room for development.

We had more NSG than MSD. I preferred the younger wines, favourites were the 12 Lignier MSD, 14 Faiveley NSG and the 14 Dujac MSD. Found some of the NSG surprisingly elegant and mistook them for MSD - e.g 13 Gouges, 06 Cathiard. The 93 and 92 NSGs held up well against the younger guns.
