Introduction

Loads of fun and a top quality selection of wines. Extra kudos to Nick for hand delivering a Vietnamese feast to match the wines - you don't get that kind of service at the average tasting :-)

Flight 1 - Austria (2 Notes)

  • 2015 Weingut Stadt Krems Riesling 1ÖTW Reserve Grillenparz 92 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kremstal

    A sense of richness - mild tropical notes, honey, lime a hint of petrol. Almost oaky in its perfume, smoke and persistent floral notes. Really draws you in with a wonderful complexity. Probably the equivalent of a Feinherb sweetness level. Peachy notes and sharp lemon on the palate, vertical acidity which punches through the core of the fruit and a long finish. This probably tasted even better as the first wine on a warm evening, but it was universally appreciated

  • 2016 Rainer Wess Riesling Ried Loibenberg 91 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

    Slightly tight, opens up with notes of tobacco, chamomile, apple, cotton and earthy tones. Invites you in with a soft texture and some body and then smacks you round the chops with killer acidity. Super persistent, lemony and powerful.

  • 2015 Pewsey Vale Vineyard Riesling The Contours Museum Reserve 89 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley

    A change of pace from the European Rieslings and quite a different aromatic profile. Sherbet, fizzy lemon, a hint of sweat and rubber, chlorine, quince. Quite salty, chalky, angular. On the palate it's relatively extracted with a touch of phenolic bitterness, citrus fruit at its core with sharp, muscular acidity biting on the finish. I enjoyed it in the context of a tasting, but not sure what I'd do with it otherwise

  • 2015 Peter Lehmann Riesling Wigan 88 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley

    Seems to have lost some of its vitality from when I tasted it in 2022- maybe in an awkward in between stage. Clean and precise with a leesy undertone, it just feels slightly insubstantial in this esteemed company.

Flight 4 - Old boys (2 Notes)

  • 1985 Georg Müller Stiftung Hattenheimer Wisselbrunnen Riesling Kabinett 93 Points

    Germany, Rheingau

    Golden orange in the glass but still showing energy and vibrancy. Smoky green mango, lanolin, brown butter on the nose. On the palate that underripe mango fruit is present and it's retained a delicate sweetness despite its age, a savoury burnt sugar note. Fully integrated, cleansing acidity. This hangs together beautifully.

  • 1993 Sybille Kuntz Lieserer Rosenlay Riesling Spätlese halbtrocken 88 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    Maybe I respected this wine more than I liked it. Caramel, passion fruit, savoury animal notes. Some sweetness and punchy acidity with lots of body- on a night of delicate, balanced wines this beat me up a bit. Amazing how a 30 year old wine at 9.5% abv can feel kind of brutal but here we are!

Flight 5 - Spatlese (2 Notes)

  • 2014 Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese 93 Points

    Germany, Nahe

    Donnhoff always delivers! Pristine, almost soapy nose with pear, seashell, sweet green apple, ripe lemon and peach. As I always find with this producer, it doesn't break new ground but it goes about its business with exceptional precision, complexity, perfume and balance. A good level of sweetness and total clarity on the palate, cleansing acidity and a savoury chew on the finish. I really must own more of this producer.

  • 2015 A.J. Adam Hofberg Riesling Spätlese 89 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    Precise, clean and fruity. Juicy apples and ripe pears, appealing but restrained sweetness on the palate. It feels young - not really complex at the moment with moderate acidity. It's a very tasty drink right now, but I'm sure there's far more under the surface.
