  • 2002 CrossBarn (Paul Hobbs) Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Decent enough. Fruity and straight up, not a lot of depth or character, but has its place and really hit the spot as a refresher to return to in the midst of some heavyweights.

  • NV Jacques Selosse Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    Light nose, acidic upfront with some grapefruit-y notes. Odd, watery middle and short finish with some nice notes. Slight caramel and toast. Had a definite improvement over time before falling off. Certainly a food-requiring champagne that didn't show well in this setting.

  • 1999 Domaine Antoine Jobard Meursault 1er Cru Charmes

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

    Very strange. Wierd petroleum-distallate nose, maybe a whiff of sherry as well. Thick on the palate and continued with unpleasant notes combined with butterscotch and mineral and good acidity. Consensus to be a flawed bottle. Only got worse.

  • 1971 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Light nose with slight furnace notes and orange peels. On the palate it morphed from furnace to minty to grassy. Not hugely enjoyable, but very stimulating. Improved for half hour or so with a gain in weight. Some soft tannins. Hints of herbals, tart cherry. Very dry finish with some odd, very persitent and not totally nice elements. Certainly past prime, but had moments and ultimately a pleasure intellectually.

  • 1997 Bernard Dugat-Py Charmes-Chambertin

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Very tasty for a while, but totally not Charmes. Fleshy and soft, nice acidity, big bright upfront fruit with cassis notes. Soft finish with slight dried fruit and extraction. Enjoyable, good elements, but characteristic of the vintage which did not do well to express terroir.

  • 1999 Feudi di San Gregorio Irpinia Serpico

    Italy, Campania, Irpinia

    Meaty nose. Very tight fruit, even after 2+ hrs opened. Syrah-like in fruit extract and meaty/pippy notes. Suprisingly, to me and my usual tastes, very enjoyable. Big fruit and fleshy notes. Long finish with slight bacon notes and growing acidic core. An appealling rusticity and jagged edges show its parentage. Well-done.

  • 1995 Romano Dal Forno Nettare

    Italy, Veneto, Veneto IGT

    Yum. Honey and bright acids. Malty notes and nuts. Very complex and totally delicious. Long finish with more malt syrup and fruit acids. Super yum.

  • 2000 La Spinetta (Rivetti) Barolo Vürsù Vigneto Campè

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Incredibly perfumed nose with violets, roses and fleshy fruit. Big and tight. Broad tannins and long finish with tar, plums and tobacco smoke notes. Very good and a great upside.

Closing

A bit of a disappointment in the overall quality as the Jobard, Conterno, Dugat-Py and Selosse all fell short of expectations. The Nettare was an absolutely smashing, a real treasure. Serpico was a suprise. Nonetheless, a fun night as always.
