  • 2019 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 96 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Pop and pour. Would never have guessed this to be Nebbiolo on the onset. Bouquet incredibly lifted with purity of fruit, cherry liquor, savoury meat spice, incense and sage. Palate dominated by icing sugar, macerated plums, rosewater and hawthorn. Elegant and pretty with silky and soft tannins on the finish - no way this is barolo! With time in voss however, this shut down and became reticent with more nebbiolo typicity emerging.

  • 2016 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Wonderfully structured with heft and density - this has all the etchings of a great great wine down the line. Bouquet dominated by soft cherry fruit, rose syrup, bramble fruit and licorice while palate showing more cherries, blood orange, grapefruit and saddle. Chewy mid-palate with great texture here leading towards a powerful finish with sturdy tannins.

  • 2016 Bartolo Mascarello Langhe Freisa 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

Much darker in fruit profile compared to the 2016 and 2019 bartolo in the same flight with a clear step-down in quality. Bouquet dominated by black plums, violets and cherry syrup with some slight fizz on the palate. Heft and power in spades here amidst sturdy tannins.

  • 2018 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Not too sure if this was the odd bottle. Weird smoky bouquet showing mainly burnt leather, ashes and incense with nothing much going on but palate showed a stark difference of cherry liquor, icing sugar and cranberries. Maybe just in a weirdly shut spot today and needs a long more time to develop.

  • 2014 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Presenting slightly shut, I would give this a bit more time in bottle to flesh out. Distinctive floral nose of violets and rose with some icing sugar and kirsch with leaner mid-palate presence. Sturdy tannins round off the finish - hold off from opening any more of these for a few years!

  • 2012 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 95 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

In my top 3 of the night and drinking superbly well with everything you can ask for - fruit, power and elegance. Sensual bouquet showing under-riped stone fruit, bay berries, lavender and saddle. Palate showing great fruit concentration with heft and power in perfect balance, never really threatening to overpower one another. Touch of acid on the finish rounds out the softening tannins.

  • 2017 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Drinking nicely today - Cherries, bayberries, plums dominate the bouquet with elegance and sensuality in the palate. There is good balance here between fruit concentration, density and acidity. Lighter in comparison in the mid-palate and seemingly not very complex but drinking lovely today. This got me a little confused, wasn’t the vintage supposed to be quite warm?

  • 2011 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Showing similar to the 2017 with slightly darker fruit profile - plums, roses, dark peaches, raisins and plums dominate the bouquet. Palate showing slightly lean but very pretty and elegant. Again, midpalate slightly confusing here, shouldn’t this have been riper?

  • 2009 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

If there was any confusion about the 2011 and 2017 not showing quite to vintage characteristics, this bottle quashed all deliberations. Indicative and in line to the vintage, this showed higher alcohol and riper fruits from the onset. Bouquet displaying cherry stems, grapefruit and plums while palate showed some sage, cardamom, black plums and bayberries. Great density and heft on the palate before running into a field of tannins. Drinking well after some decanting but would keep this away for 5 more years.

Flight 4 (3 Notes)

  • 2015 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Tightly wound and shut in my opinion. Bouquet a little too muted with kirsch, cherries and rose water emerging after a few vigorous swirls and begging.
Palate a little too sturdy and chunky today to really enjoy this one - this surely has deep fruit concentration and depth but way too young at the moment.

  • 2013 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Vintage showing its strength here with an exuberant and sensual bouquet of cherries, roses, tar and licorice. Ah, this is classic Nebbiolo! While palate showing relatively tight amidst sturdy and grippy tannins, there is clearly a sense that this is a serious rendition of Nebbiolo with fantastic structure and balance - there is immense potential and promise here, if you are patient enough to let this baby sleep.

  • 2010 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Showing similar to the 2013 with vintage characteristics on display. Slightly darker in fruit profile with unriped plums, licorice, tar and apricots coming to the fore. Palate has similar chunkyness compared to the 2015, with deep fruit concentration and structure. Again, this has promise and potential but only if you leave this alone for a while!
