Introduction

Tomas came for supper with a mystery wine.

  • 2009 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Corton-Charlemagne

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

    Lemon, almond meal, a little butter and waxy notes, touch of marzipan. On the palate it's juicy, fleshy, honey, lemon curd, peach and slight nectarine, softly textured burr, long, a little butter. Pleasing.

  • 2012 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

    "Served blind.
    Bah - slightly dusty glass. With agitation a sense of density without massive power; dark hued fruit is a little brooding, touches of plum and blackberry initially but then, with time, black cherry. In the mouth it's juicy and fleshy, fresh, dark hued fruits as well, elegant and integrated tannins and superbly managed whole bunch. Very slightly drying finish. Primary but settled. Pretty bloody special stuff. By a process of elimination I got to Vosne Romanee, 2016 and Grand Cru..."

  • 1975 Château Rauzan-Gassies

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    Blood, iron, slightly metallic, muted red berried fruit; cranberry, raspberry, herbaceous almost resinous quality, earthy, a little leather, fruit tea. Juicy, fruit more brambly on the palate, fresh, fleshy, beautifully integrated tannins are a silky burr on the tongue. Very slowly descends over time. Lovely

  • 1983 Château Léoville Barton

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

    Popped and poured. As earlier notes a little sour o the nose and palate initially with plenty of cellar stink. Over time, though, the stink diminishes (but doesn't disappear entirely) and brambles, blackcurrant, plums and sweet spice are revealed backed by leather, cedar, biscuit, forest floor, a little cigar box and saddle leather. In the mouth it's juicy and fleshy, very slightly sour brambly and blackcurrant fruit is a touch dried out, tannins are talc textured and persistent. Yum.
