Introduction

Brett Crittenden is back in town to talk up all the Guigal wines (and all of their other recent purchases). Special night as Jon Osbestein is retiring and this may be his last one.

Flight 1 - Amuse Bouche (1 Note)

Wagyu beef and caviar

  • 2023 Château d'Aqueria Tavel

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Tavel

Quite red fruit cordial on the nose; red berries, slight cherry. Juicy, fleshy, very slight textured burr, red fruits again, touch of alcohol warmth helps carry the finish which is joined by a tiny touch of bitterness. Clean, simple.

  • 2022 Château d'Aqueria Lirac Blanc

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Lirac

Clean, crisp smelling, fresh, touch of citrus (mandarin) and stone fruit (nectarine), tiny touch of bacon fat on the nose. Juicy, fleshy, tangy, quite simple, fruit present but non delineated on the palate. finishes a touch bitter. Meh

  • 2021 E. Guigal Condrieu La Doriane

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu

Rich, generous, fleshy apricot, fresh grated ginger, polished oak. Juicy, more fleshy, cream, textured burr, oaky flavours of caramel, sweet spice, touch of bitterness on the finish. Feels a little clumsy without food.

  • 2021 Château de Nalys Châteauneuf-du-Pape Saintes Pierres de Nalys Blanc

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Creamy, with oak notes offering cedar, sweet spice, waxy; an almost cereal/mealy quality, a touch savoury. Juicy and quite orchard fruit on the palate, mid palate texture is oak based, pear, apple on the finish. Okay.

Flight 3 - second entree (6 Notes)

pappardelle al ragu

this is the best I've seen the Nalys look, I think - the 2020's that is.

  • 2020 E. Guigal Côtes du Rhône

France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône

Polished red berry fruit, savoury spice, meaty, savoury notes, a little pepper, blackberry compote with time. Juicy, slightly dilute, fleshy, dark fruits, a little pepper, woody mid palate burr is drying silky, rather lovely.

  • 2022 Château d'Aqueria Lirac

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Lirac

Ashy, green, white pepper, meaty, a little sour smelling fruit with a slight almost iodine note. And that translates to the palate, it's a bit hard and bitter as well with porty alcohol warmth. Not very nice.

  • 2019 Château de Nalys Châteauneuf-du-Pape Saintes Pierres de Nalys

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Red berry compote; raspberries, strawberries, sweet spice, alcohol prickle, simple, gets more jammy with time and air. Juicy and, oddly, quite dilute compared to the nose, feels a bit out of whack. Not for me.

  • 2019 Château de Nalys Châteauneuf-du-Pape Grand Vin

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Big and bold red berry fruit, sweet spice, slightly oaky, a little plummy underpin, touch of alcohol warmth lends this a sense of clumsiness on the nose. Juicy, fleshy and equally boldly fruited here, talc textured tannins with a little savoury note. Hmm.

  • 2020 Château de Nalys Châteauneuf-du-Pape Saintes Pierres de Nalys

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Plum and blackberry compote with a little red berry underpin, meaty and savoury notes here as well. In the mouth it's juicy and fleshy the red fruit more to the fore and lending a quite zingy fresh quality, silky tannins complete the picture. Very nice.

  • 2020 Château de Nalys Châteauneuf-du-Pape Grand Vin

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Meaty and savoury, a little earthy with garrigue, red berry with a little blackberry underpin - more in the compote than the jammy space, positively elegant in fact. Juicy, fleshy, red and black fruits, plentiful tannins, slightly bitter and slight alcohol warmth are both well controlled though this is a little more bolshy on the palate it is well balanced. good.

Flight 4 - main course (5 Notes)

bistecca alla fiorentina

ampuis is just soooooooo dependably good...

  • 2020 E. Guigal Crozes-Hermitage

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage

Meaty, blackberry compote tends to jam, very slight peppery underpin, a little sour note; like a polished spinifex on the nose. In the mouth it's juicy, slightly tart, chalky tannins persist long, a touch of alcohol warmth, black fruits. Hmm

  • 2019 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Brune et Blonde

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Bacon fat, dark hued fruit compote, slightly herbaceous stalky notes, earthy and meaty underpin. Medium plus intensity acidity, a red berry note joins the black fruits on the palate, tannins are powdery, drying, rasping against the tongue. Alcohol warmth is controlled. Okay

Flight 5 - cheese - and the La la's! (3 Notes)

comte 21 month, ossau iraty, delice de bourgogne, brie

and, as usual, my favourite la la shifts with each vintage...

  • 2019 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Red hued, meaty, slightly sour smelling...smells unripe in fact, a little herbaceous almost hoppy note, the red hued fruit gets more compote with time. In the mouth it's slightly tart with red hued fruits, woody tannins, disjoined. Not for me.

  • 2019 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Dark fruits show brambles and blackberry, a little liquorice, touch of baked earth, sweet spice, rocky notes, a little blood. In the mouth it's juicy, fleshy, dark hued fruits smell fresh, chalky tannins, sweet spice, a little red liquorice, entrancing. Nice.

  • 2019 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Landonne

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Dark hued fruits are brooding, earthy, a very small tomato leaf note but this is ripe, dense smelling...feisty. Juicy, fleshy, dark hued fruits; the density promised on the nose is delivered here, concentrated but with silky tannins that prove persistent and a little drying on the back palate. Even at this young age this wine is balanced. Wow. Very good.

Closing

A lovely night, all the old crowd...who are increasingly just getting old as well and lamenting their inability to consume what is left in their respective cellars...a mistake I hope not to make...
