Introduction

A look at recent releases of Chenin blancs and some older versions from South Africa. Not flighted but I have managed them into groups of ten and the notes are short as it was a walk around tasting.

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 2010 Ken Forrester Chenin Blanc The FMC 90 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Golden hue; the bouquet is floral with apricot, Bosq pear, toast, and a hint of botrytis. A poised entry with a rich texture and concentrated flavours of ripe stone fruits, honey, lightly toasted nuts, and a lick of butter on that toast with that continuing botrytis note.
    It has a sticky mid-palate (touch of RS), lively acidity that gives it backbone and a long, lingering finish.

  • 2011 Oldenburg Vineyards Chenin Blanc 87 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

    Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Pale yellow. White fruit aromas, touch of oatmeal with a pronounced minerality and wet stone character. The palate has a marked acidity with a linear and precise profile, leading to a clean and slightly austere finish. Nice mid-palate breadth yet poised.

  • 2010 Riebeek Cellars Chenin Blanc Klein Kasteelberg Barrel Fermented 86 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Swartland

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Light gold. Opens with an intense perfume of nectarine and white melon. some complex nunaces with a rich mid-palate, though it feels light in weight and slightly dilute, with a hint of residual sugar adding sweetness.

  • 2011 Simonsig Chenin Blanc 86 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Bright yellow, the aromas tend toward yellow apple, Bosq pear, and honeydew melon. Marzipan and a drizzle of honey accent some botrytis notes.
    The palate is a lot tighter with juicy acidity, freshness, and lovely balance, although the wine is fairly full-bodied, giving it some power. It has a hint of residual sugar, and the finish is relatively short.

  • 2010 Bosman Family Vineyards Adama White 82 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Wellington

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround):Pale yellow. The nose is marked by marzipan and citrus notes, with a hint of grapefruit and cayenne pepper. The palate shows heat and a short finish, with a somewhat dilute body. It seemed rather overripe.

  • 2009 Bosman Family Vineyards Chenin Blanc Optenhorst 91 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Wellington

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Deep yellow. Aromas of ripe stone fruits, again some botrytis and marzipan edges. The richly textured palate has good concentration and complexity and follows to a very long finish.

  • 2009 Bosman Family Vineyards Chenin Blanc Sur Lie De Bos 82 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Wellington

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Pale yellow. A light, soft, airy nose with pleasant white fruits. The palate was approachable and simple, with little depth. All rather neutral - pale and wan and very little sur lie character.

  • 2009 Ken Forrester Chenin Blanc 85 Points

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Light yellow. The nose is fresh and vibrant with ripe white and yellow stone fruits, ripe apple with a dribble of honey, Forelle pear and a kiss of oak spices.
    The palate is easy-drinking with richness on the mid-palate, though it lacks depth and finishes early.
    From 35 year-old vines. Barrel fermented in larger 400 litres. 20% new oak, Spontaneous ferment.

  • 2010 Ken Forrester Chenin Blanc Old Vine Reserve 89 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Golden yellow. The nose is attractive and expressive with Bosq pear, toasty oak, warmed croissant and notes of Gala apple. The palate has ripe fruit, rich texture balanced by a crisp acidity. Fairly intense with orchard fruits, some short crust pastry and a medium finish.

  • 2011 Simonsig Reserve Collection Chenin Blanc Pinotage 89 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Pink tinted this is a Rose blend. Perfumed, lifted aromas of ripe yellow peach, nectarine and guava with melted butter, gentle spices and touch of vanilla extract. The palate is rich, creamy and round, well-balanced with a long, chalky texture and light mineral acid.

Flight 2 (10 Notes)

  • 2004 Hildenbrand Chenin Blanc 78 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Wellington

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Deep yellow. The nose is appealing, but the palate is jarring with unintegrated acidity and an extremely dry finish, lacking in length. It appears potentially scalped.

  • 2011 Mooiplaas Chenin Blanc Bush Vines 87 Points

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Pale yellow. An initial SO2 blows off to reveal Gala apples and pear. The palate is fresh and ripe, with good length and approachability.

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Pale lemon. The nose is vibrant and heady with grapefruit and orchard fruits. The entry is crisp and fresh, with a linear and long finish. Lovely!

  • 2010 Villiera Chenin Blanc 85 Points

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Light yellow. It has a rather neutral nose before slowly coaxing out the spice, toasty, and Forelle pear. The palate is ripe with fruit, with a full body and mid-plus acidity that reflects Chenin blanc but remains one-dimensional. The finish is short to medium.

  • 2009 Rudera Chenin Blanc Robusto 92 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Golden yellow in colour the nose Chardonnay-like with yellow stone fruits, honeydew melon, oatmeal and baked apples with a light pastry crust and some toasty oak. The palate is complex and rich, with a thread of lively acidity and lovely creamy lees support, infused with crushed nut, spice, tangerine peel and yellow peach that all march in unison towards a very long finish. Excellent!

  • 2009 Mooiplaas Chenin Blanc Houmoed 82 Points

    Deep yellow showing clear evolution with plenty of wood and little fruit. Full-bodied, rich, and ambitious but hasn't the acid and much palate depth. Falls short.

  • 2009 Rudera Chenin Blanc De Tradisie Flawed

    South Africa, Western Cape

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround):
    Pale lemon with initial fresh lemon and pear and a crisp acid, but this degrades quickly to wet cardboard (cork issue) suggesting TCA issues.

  • 2010 Bellingham Chenin Blanc The Bernard Series Old Vine 89 Points

    South Africa, Western Cape

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Pale to mid-lemon. Attractive aromas of Gala apple, Forelle pear, a lick of butter, a hint of minerality and gentle stone fruits. The palate is juicy with good length, excellent fruit articulation and nicely balanced with a juicy acidity.

  • 2009 Raats Chenin Blanc Original 84 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Mid-lemon. Neutral aromas with a touch of mineral, green apple, cut grass, and white melon. Light-bodied, the wine is certainly fresh, with a vibrant acidity and gentle notes, as per the nose. There is a little more to the mid-palate, with more citrus elements, clementine, and lemon, but it seemed rather muted, tailing off to a shorter finish.

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Pale lemon. The nose is fruity and pleasant, but an odd, slightly evolved character renders the palate short on flavour. Possibly scalped?

  • 2011 Mulderbosch Chenin Blanc (Steen op Hout) 87 Points

    South Africa, Western Cape

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Pale lemon. A floral nose opens to Forelle pear, honeyed but dry botrytis qualities that on the palate are balanced with a tight, fresh acid spine. Although the wine lacks some mid-palate richness, it retains light oatmeal and spice notes from some barrel use as it progresses towards a mid to long finish.

  • 2010 DeMorgenzon Chenin Blanc Reserve 90 Points

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Pale lemon. The nose is intense, and it has ripe white peach, Galia melon, and almond. A tightly structured wine with engaging zesty acidity, it has a decent balance of sweeter fruit, almost some RS, before finishing long with melon and peach flesh. Appealling.

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Deep yellow. Showing some maturity the wine has oatmeal, lees-y qualities with pear. The palate is maturing nicely with a creamy texture, light orchard fruits and a long, winding finish.

  • 2004 Jordan Winery (Jardin) Chenin Blanc Chameleon 85 Points

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Medium yellow. A neutral nose at first, slowly revealing orchard fruits. The palate has more fruit and then is a decent mid-palate core for fruits. Acidity is a little medium and struggles to keep up with the ripe fruit, yet the wine tails off medium to long. It's not bad if it's a bit simple.

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Mid-lemon. floral notes with boiled sweets and lemon travel sweets with a touch of sherbet and flint. A light, lifted entry makes this ethereal wine refreshing to drink, and its apple and citrus profile is super simple.

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Medium lemon colour. A floral, fragrant nose that is intense with flecks of vanilla, spice and popcorn/butter suggesting oak use. It is a lovely, medium-bodied complex wine with some depth and concentration balanced with a lively, fresh acidity. Inside lurks fresh peach, melted butter and some orange peel. Nice lees note to the texture.

  • 2008 Mulderbosch Chenin Blanc (Steen op Hout) 89 Points

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Medium lemon in colour. Savoury aromas of lees, Gala apples, Williams pear and grapefruit. Fairly intense the acid is lively and mineral-edged whilst the fruit core is stone and citrus mixed. Long with some oatmeal creaminess, pushing the wine along into some complexity. wood well integrated.

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Water-white in colour; aromas are light, fresh and with fruity apple notes. Medium-bodied, but the wine is pretty simple yet has a bright acid rush and notes of Gala apples and green melon. Easy going with a tiny touch of pastry.

  • 2009 Cederberg Chenin Blanc Five Generations 92 Points

    South Africa, Western Cape, Cederberg

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Pale lemon. Pronounced aromas of granadilla, passion fruit, and white grapefruit. The wine is concentrated on the palate with a fleshy mid-palate, tropical fruits and long finish. Delicious.

  • 2010 Cederberg Chenin Blanc Five Generations 89 Points

    South Africa, Western Cape, Cederberg

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Medium lemon in colour with green flashes. Aromatic notes of green apple, jasmine, grapefruit, and a distinctly cut grass, almost thiol note akin to Sblanc? A bracing, edgy acid and linear profile made it intense, but I struggled to get varietal typicity even though I rather enjoyed the wine.

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Medium lemon in colour. Aromas of oatmeal, toasty oak, vanilla, apple puree, satsuma and ripe stone fruits.
    Intense with a creamy, plush mid-palate balanced by vibrant racy acidity, this wine has peach, apricot, apple strudel (clove), and some nuts, all leading to a powerful finish. Excellent concentration—this is a cracker!
    Dry-farmed vineyard on clovelly soils

  • 2009 Stellenrust Chenin Blanc 45 Barrel Fermented 94 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Medium yellow. Fruit, intense nose with citrus, smoke and some light mango nuances. Nicely made wine there is a creamy mid-palate texture, energetic acid blade and mid-palate depth. I picked up more exotic limes and yuzu fruit over lemon, and there is a sense of fresh purity that emanated from the glass that worked with it broader richness and concentration from possibly older vines. A lingering farewell.

    South Africa, Cape South Coast, Walker Bay, Bot River

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Pale lemon. The nose is intense and fragrant, with crushed almonds, poached pear, and orchard fruits, with a dollop of creme fraiche.
    Light-bodied, the wine is fresh and fruity, with lively acidity as peach flesh and pear come to the fore with a touch of short-crust pastry. Acidity cresendos on the back palate. Very approachable.

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Mid-lemon yellow. Softly fruit nose, along with a touch of wet dog, leads to a fruitier mid-palate, fresh acid bounce and a long finish. Enjoyable but doesn't really get out of third gear.

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Pale lemon colour. Rather primate with peardrops and honeysuckle but little else. Very flat palate, mostly boiled sweets, I felt the bottle was slightly scalped as it lacked vibrancy despite its youthfulness.

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Pale lemon in colour. There is a more floral lift here with a light pear note. Not that intense, the wine has vibrant, crisp acidity with mineral and orchard fruits. bit short but easy-drinking. Some appeal.

  • 2011 Jordan Winery (Jardin) Chenin Blanc Barrel Fermented 86 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Pale lemon. Ripe Willaims pear, Gala apple puree and fresh white grapefruit with a dollop of cream make for a fresh, lively wine that shows some toasty oak.
    Fairly straightforward on the palate the fruit seems a little more muted than the nose but it is vibrant and energetic if a bit short.

  • 2010 The Winery of Good Hope Chenin Blanc Land of Hope Reserve 88 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Light yellow. Riper fruits with lots of Williams pear, yellowe apple and crushed oatmeal. Rich on the palate, this is fuller and more broad offset with a lively acidity and good length. Enjoyable.

  • 2010 The Winery of Good Hope Chenin Blanc Vinum Africa 89 Points

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Medium lemon. Ripe orchard fruits mingle with minerals. A fresh entry with a vibrant acidity that drives forward and crescendos towards the finish. It has a depth of flavour, great balance and a reasonably long finish. Enough apples and fleshy pears to soak up the acidity.

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Water-white in colour, it has fresh, fruity aromas of Gala apple, blossom, and Forelle pear. Light-bodied, it has a bracing high acidity that dominates the fleshier pear, although the finish has some orange over lemon notes and a hint of nectarine. Early-picked? It seemed rather short and lacked any mid-palate depth.

  • NV de Trafford Chenin Blanc Four V 91 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Deep yellow-gold in colour; the bouquet has ripe golden apple, oak resin, honeycomb and some toasty oak. Quite sappy on entry the wine is complex and broad with a rich texture, sweet fruits and plush fruit flesh but balanced nicely with a vigorous acidity and some lemon juice notes that strive towards a long finish. Not my usual like but this sat nicely in the palate and worked surprisingly well.
    The four is a blend of 4 different vintages.

  • NV Leopard Frog Chenin Blanc 83 Points

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Medium lemon in colour; the nose showed dried pawpaw, mouldy orange and indicated some oxidative traits. Again a NV, but it didn't work as well.

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Medium yellow, the nose is full of ripe yellow fruits, toasty oak and Williams pear, along with some floral activities. The palate is intense, full-bodied, and richly textured, revealing lots of peach, fresh papaya, and pear with a long-lasting finish. This bolder style is done well, and the oak, whilst present, isn't too intrusive.

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): (Tasted Blind): Deep gold. The nose offers honey, preserved stone fruit, and bruised apple with a touch of spice, suggesting botrytis. The palate is dry and complex with lifted acidity, showing waxiness and a creamy, cinnamon-touched finish.
    Older Chenin vines (1972 and 1975). Matured in 35% new 300-litre French oak

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Pale lemon. Light fragrant notes of spice, Galia melon and orange. A vigorous acidity threads through the wine encountering orange segments, Gala apple and slices of chilled melon flesh with that twist of toasty oak. Gorgeously long and appealling this is a smart wine.

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Deep tawny to brown rim. Intense complex aromas of Candied lemon and orange peel studded with cloves (mulled spices), Ripe cooking apples, marzipan and liquorice.
    A rich, sweet palate entry with wonderful depth, oily texture and wonderfully long finish. the mid-palate is filled with mulling spices, Sweet semi-dried Valencia orange, Turkish dates, and pear pie with pastry crust. Excellent!

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Medium lemon. Perfume aromas remind me of muscat and old ladies' perfume. Sweeter floral elements translate onto the palate as a lifted, pleasant, easy-going special Late Chenin with little depth or length. Enjoyable, clean and undemanding.

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Deep old gold. A penetrating bouquet of orange marmalade, ginger stem, and spun sugar. Intense wine on the palate with a noticeable sticky sweet entry yet with lively acidity to balance and lots of dried orange to marmalade notes and candied fruits. Medium to long finish, it is ageing well—some complexity.

  • 2010 Villiera Chenin Blanc Inspiration - Noble Late Harvest 93 Points

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Pale lemon. It's an enticing medley of boiled sweets, candied fruit, orange peel, apricot preserve (think Bonne Maman), maple syrup, ginger spices, and some Turkish dates.
    A complex palate with lively acidity balances out the sweet mid-palate as botrytis notes penetrate. Rich with some fudge appearing alongside candied orange peel and even some crushed hazelnut. Wonderful length, this is showing nicely and finishes with warming glycerol.

    (Tasted Blind, Short notes walkaround): Old gold to brown edges. Notes of candied orange, botrytis and stem ginger. However, a smoky note shows clear evolution, and the palate reflects that it has seen better days. The botrytis still shows the wine feels tired and evolved with no freshness.
