Introduction

Our 31st Anniversary.. The Olympics in town .. Who needs more reasons for a great evening of Friends, Food & Wine.

The 2004 choice in Champagne was a nod to the last time the Olympics went home.

Flight 1 - The Welcome (2 Notes)

Nibles & All
Gazpach Andaluz spiced with saucisse de morteau
5J Jamon

  • 2004 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut 93 Points

    France, Champagne

A week since we had this last and once again consistent 93-94 . Eclipsed by the DP2004 but still another beautiful experience. 93-94 and earlier TN holds true.

"The star factor here is at maximum too so helps with any celebration but really now feels to be drinking at peak and not letting go and easily with another decade of love to give"

  • 2004 Dom Pérignon Champagne 95 Points

    France, Champagne

Two very much consistently beautiful bottles on the day and this was the 12th or so time we crossed paths with this majestic wine in the last decade or so.
A journey that started with a 92 in 2013 and has become a consistent 94+ in the last few years.
And on the day it was no different, especially as it followed and was framed by the 2004 Cristal ( Papies 93) , focused, elegant and full of precision. Incredibly also very young, not austere or tight, but full of energy and easily will run the course for another 10years at minimum. Still exceptional now and probably at peak or we should say at the top plateau. 95+

Flight 2 - Some Food (3 Notes)

The Egg - Un truc d'œuf
The Galician Burger
Some Beautiful Beef

  • 1990 Château Beychevelle

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

Corked, just a bit .. but enough to break ones heart like missing on an Olympic Medal by a whisker. Shame.. Push come to shove one could drink this but pointless to drink poor wine.

  • 1996 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Lovers of classical, well aged and majestic claret should hunt this wine down like its gold dust.
Decanted for a good 30 minutes ( just take care of sediment pls and better one lets the bottle stand a bit) and post that is sung and dance and could have easily earned a spot on the Passerelle Debilly. Almost tertiary now, earthy, forest floor, soft spice, still healthy albeit full matured fruit and the nose just dances out of the glass while remaining classic and full of elegance. A magical wine and an easy 94-95 .. and we will round up on account of the value for money too. Goes straight into our buy on sight list, at least for the next decade.

Ironically a wine we have tried 5 times in the last decade and the scores started 92 in 2009 went to 95 by 2014 and seems to be in that well aged plateau since then ( Barring an off bottle in 2015). Must buy more.

  • 1996 Château Beychevelle

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

Not the most characteristic of the bottles we have had of these (the last 3 from the same batch over the last 6m were 93-94) so maybe a off bottle or just needed more decanting frankly to open up. For sure a very pretty bottle but was a bit uncharacteristic of the style and pedigree . We will call this a misfire albert was an an easy 92 .. The proper bottles were much better and this is a wine we argue as a "must" buy on sight. Better luck next time we hope.

Flight 3 - The Sweet stuff.. we are in Paris after all (1 Note)

Île de Ré Gâteau au chocolat
Ladurée Macarons

  • 2004 Hatzidakis Winery Vinsanto 94 Points

    Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini

care must be taken here as the wine has a lot of sediment. The style is a bit rustic so unsurprisingly the level of sediment is quite high. Stand the wine and even better if you have managed to disturb it filter it as bad as that can be.
A wine we have had a dozen times over the last 6-7 years and always performs and albeit is not the most elegant of the expressions of vinsanto this pure and excellent result ( also made by the man himself may he rest in peace so makes it even more special for us). Dense but not heavy, rich but also effortless. Magical stuff and is an easy 94-95 once again
