Lovely small supper with some gorgeous wines. Outstanding barbecued meats too.
So good to get together with good friends for an evening of wine, food and setting the world to rights.
2004 Dehours Champagne Extra Brut Côtes en Bosses
France, Champagne
Malty, Grape Nuts cereal quality to the nose from the extended lees aging, some hints of quince and ginger on the nose too. Palate is delightfully bitter with some under ripe apricot and lime jelly cubes. Very classy fizz. From the 2024 Gavroche cellar clearance auction at Christie's. Please to have one of these remaining in the cellar.

NV Lancelot-Pienne Champagne Grand Cru Cuvée de la Table Ronde
France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Blanc de Blancs from 22(!) parcels in Cramant, Avize and Chouilly. 36 months lees aging. 3.5g/l dosage (without the meanness I find in some low dosage Champagnes). Lemon posset on the nose with hints of marzipan. Palate right up my street with quinine character, a lovely dryness and amazing detail. Great producer and a definite re-purchase.

2007 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey
France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Lots going on here. Some chestnut honey, a few Biscoff crumbs, some crème caramel. Palate texturally gorgeous with some banana fritter, toasted pine nuts, spearmint and mango. Love this Sauternes / Barsac vintage.

2006 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Served blind. Some Macadamia nut, hints of Kumquat. Oily texture some ripe pear fruit and a lovely salinity. Very pale and youthful in the glass, some mango emerges with air. Hides its 15% ABV well. Lovely stuff and glad to have one of these in the cellar.

2003 Domaine Tempier Bandol La Migoua
France, Provence, Bandol
Served blind. Nose has lovely olive brine, iron and venison meatiness that first puts me in Cornas. Plate is rich long and enticing with tart cranberries and a distinct venison carpaccio character, just a touch of animale leatheriness that I love. We get to Bandol and Tempier in the end but once more this feels like it has years ahead of it. Cracking stuff.

2014 Mullineux Cinsault
South Africa, Coastal Region, Swartland
A real treat to try one of only two vintages in which this wine was made. Palate has milk chocolate coated redcurrants and a heady perfumed character. Some rose petals I think. Palate savoury, fresh and delightfully low in alcohol. Some ripe red plum fruit emerges on the noes with air. Great stuff.

2004 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Rich hoisin nose with duty plums and some star anise on the nose. Takes time to get going on the palate but once it does a lovely balanced wine emerges. Some figs and liquorice emerge, later some leather and garrigue herbs. Cracking drop.

2016 Domaine les Pallières Gigondas Les Racines
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas
80% Grenache, 8% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 5% Clairette. Palate has a smoky blueberry fruit and Bakewell character. Palate red fruited and rich with some thyme and bresaola character. Some subtle florality from that Clairette with some swirling. Lovely
