Introduction

The second I saw this go live, I jumped right on it. There was no way I was going to miss out on a vertical of one of my favorite Barolos and this did not disappoint at.all.

Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 2012 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

The nose is fresh, yet savory with a high-toned take to the tones of red cherries, raspberries, violets, roasted herbs, rose petals, savory spices, mint leaves, and some crushed rocks. There is a good bit of elegance to the nose that is slightly understated and balanced. The Medium/full bodied feel is deft and refined with tart, high acidity and silky, high tannins. The structure is starting to resolve a bit and let the elegance of the feel really push forward.

  • 2011 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

This is a lot like the bottle I had in March. It's expressive and red-fruited that shows off the warmth of the vintage very well. It could use a few more years to smooth out some rough edges, but I imagine that it will always have a bit of fatness to it due to the vintage.

  • 2010 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

This is shockingly open with loads of layers to the nose and tones of red cherries, morning dew, strawberries, roasted herbs, sweet tobacco, violets, rose petals, wild flowers, perfumes, potpourri, licorice, and some savory spices. I expected the nose to be fairly tight even with this having been open for a bit. That isn't the case here as it's absolutely glorious and refined if a bit primary still. The Full bodied feel is deft and layered with silky, high tannins and tart, high acidity that is really mouthwatering. If you are willing to give this at least 4 hours of air, it's a real beauty. It is a long distance runner and will be providing a whole lot of joy for many years to come.

  • 2009 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

The nose is immediate and forward with tones of spice cake, red cherries, currants, hazelnuts, incense, raspberries, leather notes, and some tobacco leaf. There is good depth to the nose, but it does lack some complexity and doesn't provide as much intrigue as other wines on the evening. The Full bodied feel is slightly foursquare, but balanced with crisp, high acidity and taught, high tannins that don't feel like they will ever truly resolve. This is what 09 Barolo is. It is very good, but it doesn't really excite or fully scratch the itch that makes me love Nebbiolo so much.

  • 2008 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

The nose is highly perfumed and intoxicating with layered tones of potpourri, red cherries, strawberries, crushed rocks, petrichor, sweet tobacco notes, violets, rose petals, warm earth notes, and roasted herbs. The nose is deep and one that you just get lost in. Giving it air certainly helped tremendously as this was really strutting its stuff. The Full bodied feel is silky and refined with crisp, high acidity and silky, high tannins. This is what happens when an 08 Monprivato is given the air it deserves. It is a stunner and everything I love about 2008 Barolo.

  • 2007 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

This bottle lacks the charm that previous 07s have shown. It's more surface level in the tones and the red fruits are slightly stewed, but not entirely. I've had better showings from previous bottles and to be fair, this isn't a bad bottle, it just doesn't move me.

  • 2006 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 95 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Where the bottle I had 2 years ago was ornery and didn't want to play, this was full steam ahead in all of the great ways! The nose is deep and succulent with perfumed tones of violets, red cherries, strawberries, raspberries, fresh picked red berries, herbal spices, rose petals, tar, morning dew, crushed rocks, and sweet tobacco leaf notes. The Full bodied feel is pure silk across the palate with mouthwatering, high acidity and high tannins that are starting to show some integration. This is really close to hitting that point where I would call it mature, but with a very long life ahead. Simply put, this captivated me.

  • 2005 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

This was a bottle that excited me when I saw the lineup. The 2005 I had 2 years ago was just gorgeous and I feel a bit slept on. The best part, that streak continues here with a nose that shows off a cool side, but with tension to the tones of red cherries, raspberries, tar, roasted herbs, violets, juniper berries, cinnamon spices, savory spices, warm earth, and some tobacco leaf notes. The Full bodied feel is laid back and poised with crisp, high acidity and silky, high tannins that match the coolness of the nose. I really feel that 2005 Piedmont gets slept on a bunch and this is another wine that really did it for me. This is more like a great Jazz Quintet that is extremely cohesive rather than a Monprivato that intoxicates.

  • 2004 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato Flawed

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Sadly, what should've been something extremely special ended up being a bit of a dud. There is too much balsamico and stewed fruits for me to feel that this is on point in any way. It's just advanced and may have seen a bit of heat damage.
