Flight 1 - Whites (4 Notes)

  • 2012 Newton Johnson Sauvignon Blanc 89 Points

    South Africa, Cape South Coast, Walker Bay, Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley

    (Tasted Blind): Pale straw-lemon. Lovely primary fruits on the nose with chilled honeydew melon, Gala apple and lemon. The palate has plenty of fruit with a rich underlay complemented with lively acidity. A little intensity and edge with cut grass and nettle the finish is quite long. Approachable, enjoyable wine.

  • 2011 Newton Johnson Resonance 92 Points

    South Africa, Cape South Coast, Walker Bay, Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley

    (Tasted Blind): Pale lemon. Lifted aromas of ripe apricot, cling peach and Valencia orange. Delightful nose leads to a fresh, vigorous palate entry that has a core of fresh ripe fruits: green melon, nettle, gooseberry, and orange peel. A lovely wine that is showing nicely with a little bit of complexity, richness, and a tapering finish.

  • 2012 Newton Johnson Chardonnay Southend 89 Points

    South Africa, Cape South Coast, Walker Bay, Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley

    (Tasted Blind): Light yellow with green tints. Aromas of blossom, white peach, ripe Tilton apricot, nectarine and a lick of vanilla. The entry is round, rich, down-the-line Chardonnay with some fatness in the mid-palate, lively, zesty acidity with some mealiness to the texture. Some vanilla with the stone fruits this is fairly straightforward fare with a medium finish. Very much fruit-driven.

  • 2011 Newton Johnson Chardonnay Family Vineyards 90 Points

    South Africa, Cape South Coast, Walker Bay, Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley

    (Tasted Blind): 
Medium lemon in colour with notes of leesy oatmeal, baking spice, ripe nectarine, and yellow peach. A rich palate entry with toasty oak notes and some sweet spices, there is an underlying creamy richness that together with the ripe fleshy stone fruit gives some breadth to the mid-palate yet there is also a cooler-edged mineral acid blade that keeps it facing forward. Mouth-coating with a long finish the oak does peek out at times but it is a nicely made Chardonnay.

Flight 2 - Reds - Pinot Noir (2 Notes)

  • 2011 Newton Johnson Pinot Noir Family Vineyards 89 Points

    South Africa, Cape South Coast, Walker Bay, Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley

    (Tasted Blind): Pale garnet towards a browning rim. Floral aromas of wild strawberries, rosehip and some tertiary notes.
    A sweet fruit entry with juicy acidity with a sinewy texture this is quite light-bodied yet the alcohol tends to protrude. Not bad, the wine has strawberry jelly powder and some cherry and a good length with silky tannins.

  • 2010 Newton Johnson Pinot Noir Elgin 90 Points

    South Africa, Cape South Coast, Elgin

    (Tasted Blind): 
Light to mid crimson veering towards a brown rim. The bouquet is savoury and ferl with wild notes and hung game, yet also with some strawberry and raspberry.
    Some felt it was Bretty but it didn’t have the bitter notes on the palate instead have decent fruit, singed charcoal, coffee grinds, and that gamey character that persisted to a reasonably long finish. Lively acid thread.
