Friday night NW wines

Introduction

Some freinds who had lived in Seattle and love Pacific NW wines came by as the were driving from Miami to Austin. We grabbed a few bottles and opened a standby that I keep in the cooler, Cambria Julia's Vineyard for the other couple that came as well who love buttery Chardonay.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2002 Domaine Serene Pinot Noir Yamhill Cuvée 88 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

    Pale ruby color with a nose of cherry and vanilla. Cherry and vanilla again on the pallate with nice fruit, but the only way to drag any mid pallate out of it was with the jaws of life and chewing food at the same time as drinking. Overall pleasant though oak not integrated. I have a personal distaste for much oak in Pinot's and this was not as disturbing as most that have seen American oak.

  • 2000 Andrew Will Merlot Ciel du Cheval Vineyard 88 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Red Mountain

    Dark color. Brett on the nose with alcohol vapors that blew off over time. Plum and blueberry fruits on the palate. Nice tannins, initially big mouthful but the fruit drops out after about 30-45 minutes.

Closing

Just for a change of pace we also opened up a Ghost Gum Shiraz and my first sip had an overwhelming sense of eucalyptus that then setteled in but that first sip was pure Hall's Cough Drops.
