Not quite as charmed by this as I was by the last bottle in 2021, but this was still a decently good village wine. More noticeably ripe and modern this time, but still controlled enough to be pleasant. The nose showed rich notes of dark berries and cherries, spice and earth. The palate was round, velvety and delicious, with soft acidity and plush, silky tannins wrapped around a core of ripe dark cherries flavours. A bit monolithic at the moment, perhaps a touch sleepy, but quite a delicious drink, especially with the Japanese beef dishes we had. I am setting aside my remaining bottle for a few years in the hope that they will calm down, drop some plump fruit and develop more complexity in time.
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru
A bit on the Napa-ish side of Bordeaux, but this was very nice indeed. Itwas clearly young, but already drinking quite well after a couple of hours in the decanter. The nose was just lovely - spice and tobacco, rich aromas of sweet berries and cherries, then some earth and capsicum, and some wafts of new oak that still lingered at the edges of the bouquet. Very attractive in a rather New World fashion. The palate clearly had great depth, but the wine really surprised me with just how superbly balance and fresh it was, with velvety tannins and lovely acidity framing delicious tones of dark fruit laced with more savoury earth and tobacco accents. A really complete wine, very well integrated too. It was so well put together in fact that it did not come across quite as rich and powerful as it actually was. With the wine's freshness, balance and integration, it was certainly not sin to drink along with our meat-heavy menu. However, it is such a lovely wine that I would really lay it aside for 8-10 years more to really let it hit its stride. Not a classic Bordeaux, but this was very good.
