I gave this about a half hour of air. It opened up nicely into well balanced tones f red cherries, crushed rocks, blueberries, red berries, rose petals, herbs, pyrazines, leather, tobacco leaf, currants, and violets. This shows off good depth and class with a classic Cab Franc profile despite the warmer vintage. The Medium bodied feel is deft and refined with crisp, medium+ acidity and dusty, medium+ tannins. This is elegant with a silky finish that goes for a bit. This could use another 2-3+ years to fully come around and will easily last another 20+ after.
Before I opened this, I did know that this has a bit of controversy behind it due to the vintage and style. Since I like to come to my own conclusions, I happily went forward and decanted it for about 2-3 hours ahead of time so that it would get the right amount of air to express itself. And, it was expressive, if in a more forward style that is quite atypical for Baudry with a good amount of blueberries, red cherries, violets, raspberries, fresh herbs, sweet tobacco leaf, roses, fresh picked berries, and currants. There is good depth and again, it is expressive....though not in the way one would normally expect from Baudry or Chinon. The Medium/full bodied feel is plush with crisp, medium acidity and silky, medium+ tannins. I liked this for what it was. It does show some of the tones and styles I would want from Chinon, but those lie underneath the plush fruit that the vintage brought. I'm not sure this will ever truly be a classic Baudry, but its certainly a great one to open for people that may be hesitant of Chinon.
And now for something slightly different after the 18. 09 was also a warm vintage (though far from what 18 brought) and maybe this is a guide for where it can go? Regardless, this was all systems go after about a half hour with loads of Red cherries, raspberries, earth notes, violets, red currants, fresh herbs, chalk tones, and new leather. There is excellent depth and expression to this. It just fills the glass with a slightly more forward take to Cab Franc, but still undeniably Cab Franc. The Medium bodied feel is refined and poised with tart, medium+ acidity and silky, medium+ tannins. The structure is still there, but it's moving more into the background and letting the wine really shine. There is still plenty of gas in the tank and in truth, it feels like it's just gotten revved up and still has plenty of room to grow. That said, it's also really awesome right now and well worth opening a bottle!
