Introduction

40th celebration with the wine guys

Flight 1 - Getting started (2 Notes)

Flight 2 - The 84s (4 Notes)

  • 1984 R. López de Heredia Rioja Reserva Viña Tondonia Flawed

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

Cork was in awful shape, barely came out with a Durand. Unfortunately wine was maderized, nothing but sweet caramelized vinegar.

  • 1984 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Gravelly Meadow 94 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain

This bottle was acquired second hand but had a great fill and cork in excellent condition for 40 yrs old. Nose was spot on with dark fruit, some gravely minerality, surprisingly youthful for such an old bottle. Impressed at how well this wine has held together. Palate still had good presence with strong tannic structure, good balance between fruit and acid, lengthy finish. Just an exceptional experience and my WOTN. 93-94

  • 1984 Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain

USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain

A touch of TCA ruined the nose for me. Others in the group didn't seem to mind (I tend to be bit more sensitive, and have a lower threshold). That said it was pretty subtle and palate was still enjoyable. Classic Dunn with brooding tannic structure that has easily withstood the past 40 yrs. Fruit is more red cab fruit, drinking well for the age and fairly long finish. 91-92 based on palate, nose was flawed thus no score posted.

  • 1984 Penfolds Grange 94 Points

    Australia, South Australia

My runner up to the WOTN. Really high toned, ripe syrah fruit. Nose was powerful with dark fruits/juicy dark berry profile. Of the 84s this felt the most youthful. Color was very dark with little signs of aging. Incredible showing at 40 yrs old! 93-94

Flight 3 - Oldies but goodies (2 Notes)

  • 1974 Beaulieu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour Private Reserve 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Amazed this has held up. 50yrs old and what an experience. Nose was all tertiary with saddle leather and earthy elements, truffle, mushroom, etc. Palate had fully resolved tannin, balanced acidity and felt weightless in the mouth. Very enjoyable and a testament to 70s Napa cab.

  • 1964 Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo Riserva

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

As per past experience with these old Borgognos, this bottle needed a bit of air to let all that bottle funk blow off. But when it does...... what a treat. A hint of barnyard, old leather, forest floor followed by an ethereal presence on the palate with completely resolved tannin and solid acid backbone. Paired great with the pasta dishes.
