Introduction

First time tasting such young Clos Rougeard. New maker's first vintage. Don't think they're ready, but lots of potential.

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2018 Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur Blanc Brézé 92 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur

Very well made. Nose is a bit shy, nectarine and pear, slightly yeasty with a hint of vanilla. Palate is much more intense, intense lemon, saline. Waxy texture with great acid tension and a very long finish. Taste of potential.

  • 2018 Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur-Champigny 89 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny

The most masculine and closed of the 3 cuvees. Nose was leathery, strong whiff of animal sweat and stem. Smoke and cassis, didn't get much fruit on this one. Tannins are a bit rough.

  • 2018 Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur-Champigny Les Poyeux 93 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny

My favourite of the 3 cuvees. Much more expressive and open than Le Clos. Lifted nose of violets and sour cherry, fresher with better acidity. Tannins are powerful but smooth. Great potential.

  • 2018 Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur-Champigny Le Bourg 93 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny

More dark fruited than Les Poyeux, also more horse sweat and denser. Lots of sweet fruit, cassis and dark chocolate. Warmer in character, with tannins like a velvet glove. Already drinking well, great ageability.

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 2019 Château Montrose 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

Tea leaves and smoke, hint of green-ess, blackcurrant. Found the tannins a bit harsh. Less complete and powerful than the 2020, though this will probably be ready to drink earlier and more elegant.

  • 2020 Château Montrose 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

This was too young, hence the lower score for a powerful vintage. Expected it to be jammier but it was actually not over-the-top. Nose of leather, vanilla and licorice, that reminded me of Napa cab, with just a wild touch of horse sweat. Judicious use of oak.

Darker in colour and taste than the 2019, denser and more masculine in structure. No doubt this will age beautifully.
