2006 Von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Riesling Spätlese 92 Points

The nose is filled with floral notes of orange blossom and honeysuckle alongside lemon peel and light peach, and button mushrooms complex it. The palate enters intensely with a piercing citrus-laced acidity. The fruit, though, is ripe. There is a richness to the mid-palate and depth with stone fruits, clementine and mineral/slate earth. Whilst I liked the acid/sweet balance, the acid is certainly on the higher side giving that more serrated edge (personally I love!). A slender wine this progresses to a long, satisfying finish.

1964 Filippo Sobrero & Figli Barolo 80 Points

1964 Filippo Sobrero Barolo DOCG: Pale browning, almost like an aged Tavel rosé. Fairly sharp volatility with a paint stripper note that overtakes all else on the nose. The palate is better with firm tannins and notes of liquorice, dried rose petals, sweet molasses, and aged balsamic vinegar wit a touch of caramel. Despite its faded state, there is still some complexity present, but it is overshadowed by the high VA and the wine is largely over the hill.

2009 Oddero Barolo Riserva Vignarionda 95 Points

Light mahogany red. Intense aromas of sweet cherry fruits (reminded me of cherry lips sweets I used to get when younger), liquorice, and spice with a little earthy fungal note. The palate has a floral lift with rose and cherry whilst leather and tar ruminate underneath. Framed with lively acid and fine, narrow tannins that provide a gentle grip extending nicely to an impressively long finish. Very approachable, there is a touch of balsamic again, but this is fresher and more poised. Subtle power. Gorgeous!
