Our final bottle, served double blind to the group and fairly easy to pick out as our bottle in the first flight. Lighter color, this shows its age and vintage, but for an '08, is drinking well enough. Opens with a nice earthy funk...there's definitely some brett in there to go along with the dried currant and mulberry notes. Medium-bodied with flavors of mulberry, plum and earth with something akin to sassafras/root beer lingering in the finish. Good for the vintage.
This had been double decanted off its sediment 90 minutes before the flight was poured.

Double blind. Dark color. Aromas of lavender, chocolate, black currants and vanilla. Full-bodied with flavors of dark fruit and black raspberry. Has some tannin to integrate. Finishes with good length. This one stumped all of us, and we couldn't believe it was a pinot. Definitely a pinot for cab lovers. (R&R)

Double blind. Aromas of spice, dark fruit, plum and fruitcake. Full-bodied with medium tannin. Nice ripe fruit on the palate- plum, perhaps fig as well. The color and riper fruit reminds me a bit of CndP, and given the tannins have begun to soften a bit, I guessed 2010. Could use some time yet. (J2)

Double blind. Light meniscus. Lovely complexity in the bouquet- florals, smoke, cured meat and an abundance of dark fruit. Full-bodied. Flavors of black fruit, game, bacon and peppery spice. This group doesn't have much Cote Rotie, so I don't think it is, but that's what it reminds me of with the meaty elements. Excellent, and in a good, albeit youthful spot right now. (R&D)

Double blind. Currants, red berries, pepper and tapenade aromas; nice complexity. Medium-bodied with red berry fruit- ripe but but note overdone- with hints of tapenade and pepper in the finish. Subtle herbal undertones. Excellent. (R&D)

Deep color. Marmalade and homey elements, perhaps some stone fruit as well. J noted that this would do extremely well at the supper table, particularly with a foie course, and he’s spot on.

Ripe apple on the nose and palate. Medium mousse and bead. While simple, a nice value.

Served double blind to the group. Youthful pale color with aromas of lemon and mineral. The palate follows the bouquet; very bright and lively. This is aging very gracefully…hopefully this is a representative sample.

Decanted into a standard bottle bottle at 3:30 in advance of our double blind tasting tonight, but poured off an ounce to check it. Deep straw yellow color with a dominant aroma of dried citron- imagine a cross of dried lemon and pineapple. There’s a subtle grassiness in the background that I find interesting. Full-bodied and rich, no doubt in part due to the marsanne and roussanne in the blend, but also to the choices of the winemaker…the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. White peach, pineapple and lemon pith flavors. Nice. We’ll see how it has changed in about 4 hours.
Update. It didn't change in any meaningful way. Excellent, and very nice, if just a bit straightforward at this stage. 92+ pts with upside. Hold.
