Introduction

A winemaker we have followed almost from day one and granted we are biased as we have come to love their wines and collect and age them as we do feel their ( and similarly those of other great producers like Argyros & Karamolengos of the last decade) super cuvées Gramina and now the latest beauty Alcyone will age gracefully for next few decades. We have being yelling from the roofs friends and foes to bye this and age while we can source them and the prices stay relatively at a good point.

The visit is beautiful too and should be capped by dinner with a pairing of their wines and frankly provides both a serene experience in an overcrowded Santorini but also an opportunity to taste their beautiful wines matched with great food.

Flight 1 - Dinner & Tasting ( Premium flight with addition of Plethora & Alcyone ) (8 Notes)

  • NV Vassaltis Pét Nat 87 Points

    Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini

Bright , playful, simple but cute, light confectionery for sure , almost a toy of a wine and just works when the time calls it. Paired very well with Oysters and Greek salad. Just treat it like a childhood friend who never grew up and the rest will be a happy memory. 87

  • 2022 Vassaltis Aidani 90 Points

    Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini

A pretty surprise and true to their style of not making heavy wines.
This limited edition on account of how little they make ( ours was bottle 637) just rolled in with a soft hand , chamomile, floral notes on the nose, light citrus and just sort of put a smile on our face without even trying . Understated and most times overlooked as a monocepage bottling this definitely requires another look and depending on what one wants to pair it with will give the noble grape a run for its money. We do not have enough data points ( unlike with Assyrtiko to know age worthiness of this but easily has another 5 years in it with no issues. Frankly delicious now. 90 easy

  • 2019 Vassaltis Assyrtiko 91 Points

    Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini

We have followed this bottling since almost the start and frankly deserves to be served out of magnum with 5 years of age so we had this almost at optimum. Please don’t over chill it and frankly when younger decant it. Treat it like a Chablis in many ways.
We love this wine funny how sometimes we refer to it as their simple assyrtiko ( vs the Gramina and as of this year the Alcyone both of which are world class wines of high quality). Soft flinty, citrus , mineral and saline wine , effortless, made with a light hand and does not really over try or try to be something it can’t. Pure expression of the noble grape and as always great and great value. 91+ and has a good decade ahead of it of happy life to evolve further.

  • 2018 Vassaltis Gramina Cuvée des Vignerons 93 Points

    Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini

We love this wine and have had a love affair with this bottling since the the beginning when a shy. Bottle of 2017 crossed our path and never looked back. Andreas buys so much of this we joke one day will be buried with a few bottles for future generations to wonder why.
One again a beautiful wine , 2 years since we had this last ( Papies 93) this continues the right path, supple, elegant, true expression of the noble grape and with a depth of flavour that adds texture to it. Almost a waxy edge at times , beautiful fruit, green fruits almost with a stone fruit edge , this to us is 1er cru Chablis is so many ways from the flinty edge to the citrus flowers . Magnificent once again an easy 93 once again.

  • 2021 Vassaltis Mavrotragano Limited Bottling 90 Points

    Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini

This is not to be confused with the mavrotragano made by others in years past, fine here is the over extraction , the heavy use of barrel and just trying to make it into something is not and can never be. We tried the latest harvest too still not bottled and lovely to see it light and effortless and albeit not out favorite grape when it comes to red one cannot but smile with it.
Light fruited, soft, almost showing an earthy side already, made with a light hand and unapologetic in where it can go and can achieve. Pretty wine in that sense and will not fail. Good 90 and will age another 5years with no issues and maybe a lot more.

  • 2020 Vassaltis Assyrtiko Plethora 90 Points

    Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini

A month since we tied it last ( Papies 90-91) and this is not our favourite expression of the noble grape for sure as the more hang time and light oxidative side never made the news for us. We asked Yiannis the winemaker actually what was his target with this wine and he told us this to him ( a wine not made every year and none was made in 2024 as harvests have been small and tough to risk grape hang time) is a tribute to how still whites were made in years past when the island really only focussed on making vinsanto.
We have our days with it some days better than others and we appreciate this is a love it or not cuvée. Good 90-91 but make sure u know what you are getting into.

  • 2022 Vassaltis Assyrtiko Alcyone Cuvée Mythologique 94 Points

    Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini

This is a new higher chapter in their wine making and is very clear from this first bottling .
We have tried twice ( Papies 93) since release and now with a bit more time in bottle it is showing its full potential and frankly we did feel that this might even go further. Flint, light smoky, bright, full of energy. Proper concentration here and with a palate presence that grips one in. Light rich feel and proper length. We can keep going on here but imagine a top end Chablis or very mineral Puligny Montrachet that they did not try to drown in oak and you get the picture. Incredibly beautiful wine and worth 94. This will live to see its 20th birthday with no real issues we feel.

  • 2018 Vassaltis Vinsanto 93 Points

    Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini

A very solid vinsanto and comes to cap beautifully the range offered by them.
Also underlines well their mentality and modus operandi where even young vines managed well in a tough environment like Santorini can excel and even out do the ancestral wines located on the island.
Subtle , light for a vinsanto , proper depth of flavour and length but never becomes heavy or cloying . Rich dried fruits, nutty, good acidity that hold it all together and in no way rustic. Beautiful wine. 93
