France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
(Tasted Blind): Check with Grammerly: 2002 Vincent Girardin Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeots Mid yellow in colour. Pleasant aromas of vanilla, apple, oatmeal, spice and some nuttiness - almost bircher meusli. The palate is elegant yet quite tart with noted greener fruits of apple and green plum. Yet as it opens the mid-palate heads to the buttery door with toffee, butterscotch and ripe peach. Oak is adding some complexity and hasn't fully integrated yet. Finishes long. Intriguing!
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Lussac Saint-Émilion
(Tasted Blind) Medium garnet. Open, blowsy nose with sweet, rich confected fruit. Lacks much definition but has a lively acid to support. A little obvious and tailed off quickly.
(Tasted Blind): Medium garnet. Bright aromas of orange rind, cedar, wet clay, and meat. The palate is tightly-knit with a lively though rising acidity giving a dry mid-palate with tilled soil, marmite and some red cherries. Light to medium bodied example that hasn’t much material in the mid-palate but the tannins are silky and the wine is nicely integrated; lingering finish Sourced from 4.92 hectares of land and is the highest ground between VCC and Petrus. Soils are clay and gravel. Blend is 70 Merlot, 25 CF, 5 CS
(Tasted Blind): Deep garnet radiating towards an orange rim. The nose offers exotic spices, such as roasted coffee, raspberry, and marmite. An excellent, intense palate entry filled with freshly picked blackcurrant fruit and toasty oak with a vanilla and cedar interplay. The wine has a tightly grained texture with fresh acidity, and it is full-bodied but well-balanced. A bigger style with warm, baked fruits, I got some furfurol notes as it opened. Fairly long finish, it is just starting to stretch its legs. Blend of 60 CS, 33 Merlot, 4.5 CF, 2.5 PV. Matured in 60% new oak for 18 months. 2000 was considered the best vintage for them in 100 years.
(Tasted Blind): Deep garnet. An initial VA note before Japanese green pepper, tertiary notes stewed blackcurrant, tobacco and cedar. A soft, approachable entry with lively acidity, this full-bodied wine with sweet fruit and new oak is still prevalent with noted spices. Not that Pauillac-like to identify, but firm, chewy tannins and a long finish. 78 CS, 18 Merlot, 5 CF.
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
(Tasted Blind): Slight mahogany brown rim. Sweet and sour nose with slight VA, strawberry, wood smoke and roasted meat. The palate is delicate and round on the mid-palate with strawberry and plum flesh, sprinkle of nuts and a medium finish. Va was only slightly annoying. 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah.
(Tasted Blind): Mid lemon in colour, it has fragrant aromas of lemons, white peach, and a terpene note. A richer entry, supported by vibrant, nervy acidity and plenty of residual sugar (30 g/l), leads to a lovely, intense mid-palate that fades slightly towards the finish. It needs time.
