pop-up 1999 Bordeaux tasting

Introduction

Tasting random 1999 red Bordeaux wines I had gathered plus some other wines from the other guys, in Ilias Rousakis warehouse at Dafni.
All bottles were uncorked without decant 2 hours before tasting

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 1999 Château Cantemerle

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

    The wine shows brick red color,
    In the nose, the wine shows ripe old Bordeaux profile, cherries, currants, earthy, peppery, fig, spicy, tobacco, bacon, a few floral notes, incense, fine oak frame, smoky paprika notes.
    Palate dry, red and black fruit, tobacco notes, herbal notes, coffee, lean body, chocolate notes, tea leaves, dissolved tannins, short finish

  • 1999 Château Giscours

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    Ripe black fruit, tobacco, spicy, some red fruit notes, a touch leaner than expected, some balsamic notes even brine, stale spice notes, fermented pomegranate notes.
    Palate following the pattern of Cantemerle tasted before but leaner, the tannins feel a touch astringent, red and black fruit, herbal green notes, short finish.
    The wine feels to be over the top and going downhill

  • 1999 Château Lafite Rothschild Carruades de Lafite

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Powerful, still going strong, ripe fresh black fruit, currant and cherry, tight, spice. There is a playdough note, smoke notes, savoury, ripeness, tense, structured, some heavier floral notes.
    Palate with black fruit, cherry, blue fruit, the tannins are there and so is the acidity, med body, opens up nicely, showing tobacco notes, herbal notes, med finish
    Outstanding, putting up a great fight with Haut Brion

  • 1999 Château Haut-Brion

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    Refined and elegant, ripe black fruit, blue fruit, still rather closed, spice thick oak frame, a touch earthy, some herbal notes, keeps expanding in the glass.
    Palate is youthful, with tannic strength, acidity is still there, the fruit is on the red and blue side, med body, plush, broad shouldered, med finish.

  • 1999 Laurent-Perrier Champagne Grand Siecle

    From magnum bottle
    Impressive depth and structure, ripe citrus and tropical fruit, aged cheese, savoury notes, some floral notes.
    Palate with nice carbonation, powerful, citrus, tropical fruit, full body, tense, crunchy, med finish, youthful

  • 1999 Château Climens

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

    The wine shows ripe fruit, stone fruit, apricot and peach, some plastic notes, playdough, glazed almond, grape notes but not jammy.
    Palate is smooth, juicy, stone fruit, peach, apricot, nectarine, pineapple jam, elegant, med finish

    Sauvignon blanc and Welschriesling, from 375ml bottle, 10.5%
    Fresh, light, floral notes, pear, green apple.
    Palate is smooth, light, feels a touch bitter
