Annual Wine Group Summer Event - BBQ Brisket at Siggy's: Brief Thoughts

Introduction
This was the annual BBQ Brisket picnic bash at Steve and Jennie's. We had a great gathering of around 30 including a fine contingent from the Seattle group including our illustrious CT founder. This is always one of not the highlight of the summer events. Siggy does an amazing job with the brisket and the wonderful chefs in this group always com ethough with amazingly tasty additions to make this memorable. And then comes the wines. The wines are always special and generously shared by all the group. Thanks to Steve and Jennie as always for hosting and to all for your fine contributions. I did not attempt to take any notes at all. So these are very brief impressions now a couple weeks after the event.
2002 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Vintage Brut Limited Edition 250 Year Anniversary 96 Points
France, Champagne
Brought this to the summer BBQ. From mag (only). This was as good as I'd hoped and as at good as it had been when we first had it in Champagne a year ago and were immediately smitten. 19 years of the lees, full of vigor and freshness, this is chiseled and bright. Loved it again. Highly recommended if you get the opportunity.

2004 Bollinger Champagne La Grande Année Rosé

Burnt orange salmon color. Quite oxidative with more sullen dried fruits and ctirus. This one was quite faded. Hope just an off bottle. No score.

Tasting pour. Same bottle as Bellissimo. Very nice, solid, bright red fruits, yeasty. 91+ to 92pts.

Small taste. From mag. Pretty oxidized for my taste, there is some golden fruit and beeswax there, but some heat too.

2019 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis 1er Cru Montmains 92 Points

I was a bit too slow to get the '19 Bougros, but this served to get the Chablis fix anyway. Love the '19 vintage, bright and great acids.

1989 Les Cailloux (Lucien et André Brunel) Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Centenaire 94 Points

Tasting pour. Same bottle as JCGuthrie. Drank this right after the '89 Beaucastel Hommage. As James noted, they are quite different with the Centenaire showing a more classically aged CdP character. Tons of black olive, olive tapenade, anise, perfumed and almost pungent garrigue with that distinct herbal quality, funk, leather, and kirsch with cherry and moderate tannins yet. While the Beaucastel is on another level, I really enjoyed this.

Tasting pour. This was in good form, dark fruits, dried forest floor and wood tones, showing nice complexity, poised, relaxed and quite tasty. This is one I'd have liked to sit down longer with.

2005 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas 94 Points

Tasting pour. Drank the '05 and '06 back to back. The '05 was more classically styled, even handed, balanced, nice juxtaposition of fruit, earth and minerality. The '06 is bigger, bold, riper, showing the flashy bold black fruits and energy. Both really good. I favor the '05 as they are.

1986 Château d'Yquem 97 Points

Brought this for the desserts at the BBQ. I thought it was incredible. The color was medium gold and the wine was so lively and energetic, the full on Yquem experience with finesse, penetration, depth and complexity with amazing lift and length. Loved it.

Small tasting pour. Same bottle as Bellissimo, so refer to his detailed note for more. I found this to be drinking well. Earthy, peppery, spicy, dark, maybe a bit more introverted than at times. The '01 has never been a total rock star for me. Always solid, but not quite at the level of other '01's for some reason. Still hanging onto one though. 92 to 92+pts.

2014 Domaine Tempier Bandol Rosé 91 Points

Tasting pour. There's a lot to like here from the brilliant earthy, swampy, minerality to the briny citrus. The fruit is much more subdued and the btrightness and fresh air has faded. While I thoroughly enjoyed this, and certainly found it interesting, I'd say it would have been better a couple years ago. Fun to see the evolution and get the data points on how far to push these. Obviously it depends a lot on where you want the fruit to be, but for me it looks like maybe 8 years and drink up, but they can go longer.
