Introduction

A very nice night and weather appropriate for syrah.

  • 2015 Evening Land Vineyards Pinot Noir Blanc de Noirs Seven Springs Vineyard 89 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

    Drank a small pour at a tasting. Quite dry, a bit rustic and slightly musky. I was expecting better, especially considering the price. 88-89 points.

    The wifes note: the nose is nice and the palace is dry with a lemony crispness.

  • 2016 Two Hands Shiraz Lily's Garden 90 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

    Lots of berries and a bright palate. There is (not much) earth. This is surprisingly light for an Australian shiraz.

  • 2016 Kúcs Gyula Syrah Red 88 Points

    Hungary, Dél-Pannónia, Villányi

    Quite light bodied for syrah. Black pepper, green bell pepper and saldy not much else. Note that this bottle states "reserve" and I don't know if they make a non-reserve.

  • 2017 Ramey Syrah Rodgers Creek Vineyard 88 Points

    Drank a small pour at a tasting. Dark, dense, slightly medicinal and rather in-your-face. I've always adored their chardonnay and disliked their reds - this was no exception.

  • 2017 Pax Syrah Sonoma-Hillsides 90 Points

    Pop and pour, drank a small pour at a tasting over 1 hour. Well, this was much better than previous 2 bottles. In fact, I think I enjoyed it more than many other people at the tasting. I appreciated the lively acidic palate and the complex hillside-type fruit that is savory and admittedly a touch on the green side. Think underbrush, green herbs and peppers.

  • 2010 Lillian Winery Syrah 89 Points

    Decanted about 30 minutes, drank a small pour at a tasting. Really bright red fruit. Not great complexity and little else here except that red fruit. This seemed kind of simple. After also tasting the 2013 in the same flight, I can tell that there is a touch of earth and some tobacco in this, but its somewhat hidden in the background.

  • 2013 Lillian Winery Syrah 89 Points

    Decanted at least an hour, drank a small pour at a tasting. Younger and less interesting than the 2010 in this flight, although I'm scoring the same because the fruit was prettier. I'm surprised this didn't show better tonight. Root day? A bottle a year ago was much more impressive.

  • 2018 Saint Cosme Côte-Rôtie 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

    Drank a small pour at a tasting. I appreciated the green olives, smoked meats and herbs in this wine. It seemed a bit heavy for a cote-rotie which is my experience with this producer. Nonetheless, as the only French wine that I drank at this syrah tasting, it was well received.

  • 2010 Clarendon Hills Astralis 90 Points

    Drank a small pour at a tasting. While the fruit is big, the wine is not jammy or excessively large. There is a bit of alcohol poking through which I found distracting. This was fairly pleasant but I certainly didn't enjoy it as much as others or some professional critics.

  • 2016 K Vintners Syrah Powerline Vineyard 91 Points

    I had a small pour of this alongside the 2016 Powerline Beautiful. While I appreciated both there was a fairly significant difference. This lacked the depth and complexity of the Beautiful and was more straightforward. Nonethless, a lovely earthy supple syrah that was drinking well.

  • 2016 K Vintners Syrah The Beautiful Powerline Vineyard 92 Points

    Likely pop and pour, drank a small pour at a tasting. I enjoyed the depth on this, with rich earth, spice, smoked meat, minerality and black pepper. I chided several people at the tasting that this wine was "Beautiful" while someone had also brought the non-beautiful 2016 K Vintners powerline syrah, and what is the difference???? I was surprised that no one knew. However, I just checked K Vintners website, and in the description of this wine they don't have any explanation as to what makes this one beautiful and the other not beautiful. So I guess its in the eye of the beholder? The Beautiful gets +1 point from me.

  • 2022 Tensley Syrah Colson Canyon Vineyard

    Pop and pour, drank a small pour at a tasting. This bottle was consistent with my note from 6 months ago. Nice enough but kind of big and the oak needs to integrate. Hold.
