A group of Neb Heads (most of them from the Nebbiolo group formed through the Vinous forum) met to check out ten vintages of Cappellano Barolo Pie Rupestris from Gabutti in Serralunga d'Alba.
For more background on the wines of Cappellano, check out the FWG's page on Barolos and Barbarescos Made by the Cappellano Winery.
We met at Hearth, 403 East 12th Street (at 1st Avenue) in the East Village at 6pm. The food and service were superb as before.
Photos and more details can be found on my website.
2001 Cappellano Barolo Piè Rupestris Otin Fiorin (Gabutti) 96 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
[Double-decanted about 2pm for 4 hours.] Beautiful nose of black fruit, tar, and spice. Big and rich. Quite tannic, but delicious, riveting, and expansive. Still a young beast of a wine. Should be glorious in 10-20 years. 96-??

2003 Cappellano Barolo Piè Rupestris Otin Fiorin (Gabutti) Flawed
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
[Double-decanted around 9am for 2 hours. This had a lot of sediment.] Nose of smokey red fruit. In the mouth, the wine is thin and bitter. My guess is that this bottle was cooked.]
