  • 1990 Château Léoville Las Cases 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

    Overall take aways:
    - Tasting of three vintages from Poyferé, Barton and Las Cases
    - all three are 2nd tier wines
    - Las Cases should be the most elegant, most likely to be 1st Growth, is right next door to Latour
    - Las Cases and Leoville have the same winemaker
    - Las Cases has a large vineyard area, the other two estates are fragmented
    - Leoville Barton has 25% Merlot, making it approachable even at a young age
    - Las Cases is the most finesse-rich overall, Barton the most wholesome and Poyferre with the most power and fruit expression
    - 2000 was still extremely ready and primary fruity, but lagged somewhat behind expectations
    - 2005 is again rather closed, with a lot of fruit and too little balance, tannins are still strong

    Tasting Note:
    - All wines got double decanted 2hours ago, tasted blind
    - Intense nose, already tertiary, lots of spices and leather, undergrowth and forest floor, leaves, lots of roasted flavours. Complex.
    - On the palate still present cab spices, peppers, tomato leaves, is clearly younger than on the nose. Still present tannins, is somewhat one-sided on the palate, as the fruit is no longer very present but so elegant and precise. Great wine to enjoy!

    - intense, precise aromas of cab. Sprices, toasting, forest floor but all a little more discreet and delicate than Las Cases 1990. Has even more fruit and seems younger, still has dark fruit.
    - Much more fruit on the palate, I like it better because the terroir and fruit flavours are more balanced. Still has grippy tannins, lacks some pressure and freshness / elegance.

    - The palate shows the most fruit expression compared to Las Cases and Barton 1990, with good acidity and ripe tannins, but is the least complex. Nevertheless wonderfully pleasing.

    - Open and medium intense nose, amazing primary fruit, blackberries, plums, mulberries, vanilla, subtle toasting.
    - Still plenty of power on the palate, ripe and soft tannins, nice acidity (medium), is very pleasing but lacks a final kick of freshness.

    Tasting Note:
    - All wines got double decanted 2hours ago, tasted blind
    - Has an intense nose, but the fruit flavours are much less precise, blackberries, the aromas are too dispersed. This bottle doesn't really catch me
    - Also jammy on the palate, dark, even black fruit, liquorice, too little freshness and precision. Extremely soft tannins, a full-bodied wine.
    - I recommend leaving the bottles for a while, the strong fruit expression still needs to settle.

    - 60% Cab. Sauvignon, 40% Merlot
    - Here as well even more fruit expression than in Barton 2000, aromas of blackberries, plums, wild berries, violet fruit, graphite, vanilla
    - Also lots of extraction on the palate, ripe and soft tannins, still present acidity, is somewhat one-sided but offers a sexy fruit profil. Very long on the finish.

    - Restrained medium intense nose, has a nice blue fruit, plums, vanilla and graphite, the most complex of the three 2005s
    - Very similar to the 2000 vintage, soft tannins and medium acidity, but for me too heavy, too much fruit, but this is at least precise. With more time in the glass, it becomes round and still pleasant to drink.

    - Restrained, closed nose, then opens up slightly, blackberries, plums, vanilla, coffee
    - Not really balanced on the palate, I miss the elegance, the acidity is there but too much body and extraction. Tannins are medium plus. The finish is somewhat plump and not precise enough.

    - Drunk out of a MAGNUM with dinner
    - Beautiful, open and intense nose, dark and slightly blue fruit, ripe but not too ripe, has a fresh undertone.
    - This magnum freshness continues on the palate, but still has quite a lot of fruit extraction, liquorice, blackberries, yet somehow fun to drink (probably because of the magnum and good acidity). Only 13% but this lightness is not enough noticeable in my humble opinion. People pleaser at its best!

    - Got opend as a "supplément"
    - Beautiful, precise nose, red fruit, some toasting, cab sprices, roasted flavours, very nice and surprisingly not too dark fruity for a 2003
    - The palate lacks a bit of structure, the acidity and tannins are not there enough to last for a long time. But quite fun to drink like this, not greasy or extracted as one might think. The tannins are still slightly drying.
    - A positive surprise in terms of lightness but I would recommend to drink this vintage soon as it lacks of structure in the mid-palate.
