Flight 1 - On the way south (5 Notes)

  • NV Loncle Champagne Premier Cru Tradition Brut 89 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

    (9/11/2024)

Humble yet lovely Champagne. 90% Chardonnay, 10% Pinot Noir. Lemony and slightly bready. A nod to the tropical, touch of ripe mango? Richer than some but not overly sweet. Great QPR too.

  • 2006 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

    (9/11/2024)

Wow. What a wine. Takes about half an hour to really get going on the nose but after some coaxing there are layers of slatey minerality, something gorgeously saline and some lovely pineapple stalk greenness. The palate is so well balanced and lasts a full minute; some lime jelly, and hints of blood orange zest, lovely acids and just that hint of oyster shell. Monsieur Raveneau knows what he is doing!

  • 2001 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

    (9/11/2024)

The finest Côte Rôtie I've had? On ne sait Jamet... Lots of classy northern Rhône greatest hits olfactory joy here. Some iron filings, smoky plum, raspberries and some hung venison gaminess. Palate combines some wild strawberry sorbet with some peppery darker fruits. After half an hour there are some bonfire embers on the nose and just a touch of star anise. The fruit on the palate seems a tad sweeter almost but not quite into the bramble jelly spectrum. Cracking stuff.

  • 1990 Château Haut-Bailly 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    (9/11/2024)

Another top draw wine, perfectly cellared and just singing. Classic and classy Gravesy tobacco leaf nose. The fruits are rich and blue fruited initially, half an hour in the decanter and some hints of cinnamon infused plum fruit emerge. Palate just to die for; fully resolved tannins, refined acids and such a more-ish savouriness. The fruits are a little tart in the redcurrant spectrum. So refined.

  • 2021 Domaine Yves Cuilleron Saint-Joseph Cavanos

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Saint-Joseph

    (9/13/2024)

On day two this has opened up somewhat there is a touch of pomegranate on the nose with some redcurrant jelly and a touch of iron. Not a cuvee I've seen before but would buy again.

  • 2021 Wolfberger Riesling Vieilles Vignes

    France, Alsace

    (9/13/2024)

Nose has gained some richness, some of grandma's mandarin segments from a freshly opened tin. Grapefruit jelly. Just a hint of tarragon. Palate is refreshing and lime infused, lasts a good 20s. A touch of pepper on the finish. Punching above its weight as Wolfberger wines often do.

  • 2015 Charlier & Fils Champagne Special Club Brut

    France, Champagne

    (9/13/2024)

From magnum. Lemony, chalky, some ginger and torn croissant. My first of this vintage. Shows commendable poise and length, palate shows some touches of under ripe pear and some quinine tartness. Lovely stuff.

  • 2018 Henri Prudhon & Fils Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Sur le Sentier du Clou Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru

    (9/13/2024)

Dark fruited and slightly meaty nose. Hints of beef pho. Touch of Lindt dark chocolate with cherry and later a touch of aniseed. Not overly boozy as some wines in the Côtes de Nuits were in this solar vintage.

  • NV Michel Arnould & Fils Champagne Grand Cru Brut Rosé

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    (9/13/2024)

Red fruited and charming, lowish dosage fizz. With air some Morello cherry sorbet on the nose. More-ish refreshing and very poised on the palate. Classy stuff.

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru

  • 2017 Château Beau-Site

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

    (9/14/2024)

Younger than I normally approach claret but this is showing great promise and becoming approachable. Fruits a glossy and dark with just a hint of cherry brandy lift. Something a touch balsamic on the spicy dark fruited palate. Some over ripe plum fruit and some tart cranberries.
