Introduction

A selection of wines from around the Mediterranean...

Flight 1 (16 Notes)

  • 2023 Domaine Zafeirakis Malagousia

    Greece, Thessaly, Tirnavos

Waxy, saline, a little finger lime, almost a touch of garrigue, citrus. Juicy, textured burr, slightly saline, savoury, tangy, non intrusive alcohol warmth on the finish. Food wine but fine.

  • 2023 Papagiannakos Savatiano Vieilles Vignes

    Greece, Continental Greece, Attica

Lemon, bay leaf, fresh herbs, rocky minerality. Juicy, fleshy, citrus with a little fruit lozenge quality, touches of raw silk burr. Simple, pleasant, sunshine quaffer

  • 2021 Argyros Assyrtiko Estate

    Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini

Savoury, quite mineral, baked rocks, chicken and herbs. Waxy and bitter on the palate, almost a little tobacco leaf note. Not one of the better ones of these I've had. Nah.

  • 2022 Petilia Fiano di Avellino

Italy, Campania, Fiano di Avellino DOCG

Apricot and almond meal completes a simple nose. A sense of waxy richness initially but it's a bit flat and lacks fruit. Non intrusive alcohol warmth. Meh.

  • 2023 Cantine Petrosino Grillo Sicilia Petros

    Italy, Sicily, Sicilia

Tangy smelling, citrus and orchard fruit, floral top notes. Waxier on the palate but still fresh, a little salinity joins the fruit, finishes with a touch of texture and a pinch of white pepper. Nice.

  • 2021 Cantina Marilina Noto Cue

    Italy, Sicily, Noto

Biscuit, waxy tends to polish, creamy lactic notes, a touch of muted apricot, raisins> Quite bitter with a touch of rancio on the palate, tangy, grippy burr. Vino da meditazioni?

  • 2022 Cantina Marilina Grecanico Sketta

    Italy, Sicily, Terre Siciliane

Fully 'orange' skin contact, sour smelling bruised stone fruit, waxy polish. Slight sour acid lends tartness to the stone fruit, tightly textured burr tugs and bothers the tongue, finishes peppery with alcohol warmth. Not for me.

  • 2022 Serra & Barceló Terra Alta Aucalà

    Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Terra Alta

Peachy and floral, a little non delineated stone fruit in support. Fleshy and juicy on the palate, simple, charming, slight textured and bitterness intrude with a saline underpin on the finish but not sufficient to be off putting.

  • 2022 Château du Rouët Côtes de Provence Cuvée Réservée Tradition

    France, Provence, Côtes de Provence

Very slight leesy cheesy notes over pretty cherry fruit and white blossoms. Juicy, a little more savoury and tangy on the palate, plenty of drying textured, fruit is slightly lost behind this. Touch of non intrusive alcohol warmth on the finish. Hmm.

  • 2022 Domaine Zafeirakis Limniona Rosé

    Greece, Thessaly, Tirnavos

Clean with a smidge of bacon fat, nominal fruit, simple nose. In the mouth it's got juicy acidity, savoury and far more mineral. Simple.

  • 2023 Celler de Capçanes Montsant Mas Donís Rosato Flawed

    Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Montsant

Meaty and savoury with Bovril, touch of slurry as well. All translates to the palate but more in the slurry space. Awful. I can't believe this is meant to taste like this. FLAW

  • 2022 Telmo Rodríguez Al Muvedre

    Spain, Valencia, Alicante

Rich, ripe non delineated black fruits, a little savoury spice, touch of jammy quality to the fruit with a plush savoury underpin; perhaps some whole berry work? All translate to the palate, fresh, silky tannins, okay.

  • 2021 4 Kilos Vi de La Tierra Mallorca Motor Callet

Spain, Balearic Islands, Vi de La Tierra Mallorca

Funky, wild ferment, whole bunch lends a touch of jubiness; has that poulsard/trousseau vibe but riper and more black hued in the fruit space. In the mouth it's sourly juicy with fresh, wild, crunchy black fruits, emery paper tannins. Okay.

  • 2021 Cantine Petrosino Nero d'Avola Sicilia Petros

    Italy, Sicily, Sicilia

Savoury, earthy, slight farmyard over baked black plums and a tiny little rubbery note. It's a little oxidised on the palate, black plums, slightly coarse tannins, woody grip. out of whack combined with alcohol warmth means this is a Meh at best for me.

  • 2022 Thymiopoulos Xinomavro Jeunes Vignes / Young Vines Naoussa

    Greece, Macedonia, Naoussa

Savoury, very slightly oxidised bruised fruit quality with baked black fruit and baking spices. On the palate it's a little sour with medium plus intensity acidity, alcohol warmth, drying powdery tannins, fruit is a little dilute. Lots to not like here.

  • 2022 Domaine du Gour de Chaulé Gigondas Cuvée Tradition

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

Baked non delineated red fruits are a little jammy, touch of garrigue. Rich and chewy on the palate; the combination of concentrated (albeit savoury) fruits and woody tannins is quite over-powering. Woof.
