Introduction

B&E came over to look at four Australian Cabs that I'd manage to get from Mark (at a very kind and special price). I cooked lamb shank stew and roasted some spuds to complete the experience.

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2018 Juniper Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Cornerstone Wilyabrup

    Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

    Double decanted 90 minutes before serving at about 17-19C. Medium minus intensity aromas of cream, blackcurrant, slight mint, cedar, sweet spice. A little sour on the palate means that blackcurrant gets very 'fresh', coarse flour tannins, alcohol warmth intrudes slightly on the finish. It feels a bit disjointed, which is a concern after 6 years.

  • 2018 Zema Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Family Selection

    Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

    Double decanted 90 minutes before serving at about 17-19C. Polished black hued fruits show mostly blackcurrant, savoury underpin, a little almost saline note, touch of red berry here as well. Juicy, medium plus intensity acidity, black fruits, liquorice, drying powdering tannic tug, slight cedar. Hmm.

  • 2022 Elderton Cabernet Sauvignon Barossa

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa

    Double decanted 90 minutes before serving at about 17-19C. Ripe - the alcohol lends a peppery note, black hued fruits are a bit baked and non delineated, sweet spice. Juicy tends to medium plus intensity acidity lends a little sourness, tannins are drying but quite silky. More baked black fruits. This really is another anonymous baked Barossa Cabernet with, for me, absolutely no varietal typicity.

  • 2021 Elderton Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz/Merlot Ode to Lorraine

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa

    Double decanted 90 minutes before serving at about 17-19C. Baking spice, red and black fruits show mostly plums, touch of slight blackcurrant and cedar in the background. Alcohol is evident here as well but not as overtly warm as the straight estate Cabernet. Polished on the palate, the adjusted (?) acidity lends a sur red fruit freshness to accompany the plums and muted blackcurrant. Tannins are silky, in the background but provide a drying note, baking spice, creme caramel, non intrusive alcohol warmth. <shrugs>

Closing

This was a disappointing experience for me. Zema was probably the pick of the bunch, I continue to struggle with Barossa Cabernet...it just seems so lacking in typicity but it was great to have the opportunity to try these.
