Introduction

Alex, Vanessa and Richard joined me at the Sanderson for supper and BYO blind tasting.

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • NV Albert Levasseur Champagne Extrait Gourmand Brut Rosé

    France, Champagne

    Served blind.
Cherry, raspberry, a little dusty spice, bread yeast, a little pastry note. Juicy, tangy, textured, alcohol warmth on the finish as well as a little bitterness. Hmm.
    I guessed California non-vintage.

  • 2007 Pierre Damoy Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Tamisot

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

    Served blind.
Black hued fruits, black fruit tea, slightly oxidised notes, sweet oak spice, liquorice, al little sour cherry. Medium plus intensity acidity, woody textured, a little alcohol warmth, long, with time a little forest floor joins the black fruits, surprisingly rich. Lovely, really good.
    I knew this was mine.

  • 1996 Penfolds Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 407

    Australia, South Australia

    Served blind.
Caramel, slightly oxidised, black fruits; bramble, plums, liquorice, star anise, sweet spice, charcuterie, meaty, alcohol prickle. Medium plus intensity acidity, alcohol warmth, brambly fruit, liquorice, soft tannins.
    I guessed Barossa Shiraz 1998 or 1999

  • 2022 Stella Bella Cabernet Sauvignon Serie Luminosa

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

    Served blind.
Bright but ripe blue and black fruits, alcohol prickle lends a peppery note, touch of red liquorice, fruit tea, sweet spice, slight vanilla, a little violet and lilac. Medium plus intensity acidity, chalky textured tannins prove ripe and persistent, muted black fruits, alcohol warmth on the finish.
Annoyingly I was back in the Barossa and back on the Shiraz but young - 2021 or 2022

Closing

An exceedingly indecorous staff service and appalling wine guesses from me could not mar a lovely evening.
