Introduction

We gathered for our regular third Friday brown bag tasting. Each taster brings one red in a brown bag and we taste the wines in flights, making an attempt to guess what we have in our glasses. The hosts in this group provide double blind warm ups, and often a bonus red and/or sweet wines to end the evening.

Flight 1 - Warm ups (2 Notes)

Flight 2 - Reds (4 Notes)

  • 2018 Domaine Courbis Cornas Champelrose

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

    Blind. Deeply colored, with notes of dark berry fruit, pepper, violets, blue fruit and florals. Full-bodied with flavors of black fruit and spice. Clearly syrah, though it doesn't really scream Cornas. Still enjoyable, and one I look forward to following over the coming decade. This had been quickly double decanted four hours before service.

  • 2017 Domaine Coursodon Saint-Joseph Silice

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Saint-Joseph

    Double blind. Aromas of dark fruit, plum, mocha and spice. Medium tannins with good plummy fruit and a lengthy finish. Very nice. (J2)

  • 2021 Honig Cabernet Sauvignon

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Double blind. Aromas of chocolate, plum and black fruit. Firm tannins with currant, plum and coffee flavors. Easy to pick out as a young Napa cabernet. (R&D)

  • 2020 Marcelo Pelleriti Cabernet Franc Signature

    Argentina, Mendoza, Valle de Uco

    Double blind. Notes of dark fruit, plum and something a bit brambly, almost zin-like, in terms of the fruit profile. Medium-bodied with abundant dark plummy fruit. (R&R)

Flight 3 - Reds (4 Notes)

  • 2022 Dakota Shy Cabernet Sauvignon

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Double blind. Deep color. Chocolate, plum and black raspberry aromas. Full-bodied. Big fruit and tannins- large scaled and almost flamboyant. Sweet black fruit and spice qualities carry the finish. (R&R)

  • 2018 Domaine Courbis Saint-Joseph Flawed

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Saint-Joseph

    Blind. Opens with a chemical/plastic overtone that never completely blows off. Red fruit tones underneath.

    This had been double decanted five hours before service and I did not detect the chemical note when first opened.

  • 2011 E. Guigal Saint-Joseph Vignes de L'Hospice

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Saint-Joseph

    Double blind. Medium red color with notes of black fruit, herbs, earth and asphalt. Complex; easily my favorite of the flight. Medium-bodied with flavors of mixed red and black fruit, incense and Asian spice. Lingering finish. Excellent. (J2)

  • 2021 Faust Cabernet Sauvignon

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Double blind. Loads of buttery oak notes over black fruit. Loads of tannin and big cabernet fruit. (R&D)

Flight 4 - Bonus red / dessert wines (3 Notes)

  • 1995 M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

    Double blind. Dark youthful color. Notes of asphalt, dark plummy fruit. dried herbs, burnt rubber and white pepper. Full-bodied with soft tannin and flavors of dark fruit dominating the palate. Subtle earthy, vegetal elements as well. Becomes more red-fruited as it breathes in the glass. Long finish. (J2)

  • 1984 D'Oliveiras Madeira Boal Reserva

    Portugal, Madeira

    Light color with notes of toffee, baked apple, pear and candied pecans. Flavors of toffee, apricot, pear and caramel. Delightful. (J2)

  • 1959 Antonio Jose da Silva Porto Vintage

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

    Light color. Dried stone fruit and nutty qualities. Hints of dried spice as well. A very unique and enjoyable bottle. (J2)
